I'm stuck in Helper with a bad rod or lifter. Two mechanics in town, neither has time for me. I have roadside assistance and can get back to salt lake if i have to, but I'm trying to rescue a moab trip.

I have basic tools, but I've never been inside my valve cover and I'm not sure the phillips parking lot is the place to start. Any help?

Crap, that's bad news.

I just got off the phone with Kevin B. he's hoping to fix it on the side of the road and finish his trip to Moab. Let's hope it's not the rod.

quiet at idle, starts a godawful clatter when i rev it. it sounds like it's coming more from the top of the motor than the bottom, and it's rpm dependent.

got a mobile mechanic on the way out of price, gonna see what he thinks.

Also pull the inspection cover and check the torque converter bolts, this happened twice on one of my Jeeps over the years and can sound like an engine noise, once it was a bolt backing out and the other time it was caused by one of the transmission bolts shearing in half and allowing it to move enough for contact.
 
driving to the shop, it got worse and seized. finished the trip on a strap, and he's letting me use his garage. tearing into the valve cover now, he thinks it's a pushrod.

not in any immediate need, I'll keep the thread posted.

I'm down for the count. got damage on plug three, and it looks like theres a.chunk missing from the piston when we scoped it.

i can have my wife come get me with my tow bar, but my little explorer won't like dragging the 4runner.

anybody with a trailer or tow dolly wanna come get me from price? i can do gas money and lunch/dinner, and we can talk about a little more for your time if that's what it takes. ;)

Dude. This Sucks. I know you've been planning this for awhile, wrench party instead? I think Ty has a trailer and Price isn't terribly far from him.

If I was not getting in a plane to come home I would help you out. You can use my truck and trailer.

if you run into any towing problems i will be going Price this Friday and heading back to SLC on Saturday evening, I will have room on my trailer to bring ya back.

Just got home. Andrew went above and beyond getting me and my junk back, so if you didn't know how cool he was before you do now. Andrew is a rockstar. So's the mechanic who got me off the side of the road, I started a new thread on him. Thanks Anderson750 for the offer of the truck and trailer, we didn't end up needing it but I appreciate it just the same!

Now I need to decide if I'm going to try and fix this motor, swap in a remanned block, or start my 7MGE swap early. I'll probably kick off another thread on that once I get a better look at the damage.
