We need some help, just because we haven't done it before and don't want IT to go bad. We are going to weld the stock diff on my friends 86 bronco 2. Its the 7.5" rearend. We have the welder and can have the diff cover off, just don't really want to screw it up. Is there anyone who has done a lot of these that could come over to his house in provo by wills pit stop and weld it up for us. I am old enough to buy you a diet coke with lime or somthing.......Thanks
Tim

I heard your suppose to take the diff gears out and do it that way. Clean it all up first then weld. I'm sure it's been done the other way, but what do I know.

Its not a drop out diff though. Just has a diff cover, and I don't want to muff with the gears because I know somthing will get screwed up.

Is gear oil flammable? I still think your suppose to take the gears out to do it right.

Yes, take the gears out! Remove the ring gear and cover up the bearings so you don't get spatter on anything... common sense!!!

Hickey welded my IFS front with the cover off the diff, it worked, but I sold the truck a week later. So can you take the ring gear out etc then put it back together the way it was or what? I just don't want to screw up the gear lash or whatever it is, see I don't even know what its called, thats how far I have gone into a diff.

Here's what you do: unbolt the bearing caps and pull or pry out the carrier. Make sure to keep track of the shims on each side, because they need to go back in exactly how they came out. If the bearings are pressed on the carrier, cover them up real good so they don't get spatter. If they're not pressed on, remember which side they came out of and put 'em back as such. I'd unbolt the ring gear before you weld, too, so you don't splat on that either. Good luck!

Tim , make sure you mark the bearing caps too. As to which side they come off of and which end goes up too. Then make sure you weld em with a deep penatrating rod like 6011. Weld the hell out of em, you don't want to break somewhere on the trail.

Its not going to be with stick, he has a gmaw and I will probably have his dad do the welding, since he is a fabricator for a profession.

I would just pull the cross pin and get the spider gears out. Then weld in the teeth on the spider gears so that when I try's to differntiate(is that even a word  ) it will bind. That is the way I did it and it worked forme but I didn't run it very long.

Yah,,,,,That's your way.....
On Junk: for speed just weld it up and throw in some oil....

On medium quality: Pull the carrier, apply anti spatter, cover vital parts and have quality welder do some weldin...

High Quality: QUITE BEIN A CHEAP ASS AND BUY DETROIT!!!!
