I you were in the market for a new car, what would you buy? Let's say 2007 or newer for under 20k..

I need to buy a few next week to start a new car dealership and would appreciate some input.

Thanks

I just bought a 2010 Mazda 6 and this one is a POS it's been in twice for and oil leak that Mazda does not want to warranty.
my wife a has a Mazda x9 and it's been a great car, but this one for what ever reason has been nothing but problems. I am working out a deal at the dealer ship to return it and buy something new.

What kind of car dealership, and are you planning on being successful? If you're registered with any one of the wholesale auction companies, there are awesome online tools for researching purchase trends in different areas. Similar data is available from NADA as well.

Go look at CarMax's lot and scale it back to your size and the models you want to carry.

For the guy doing his market research on RME, this is probably his best bet. Excellent suggestion.

As someone in the car business for many years I have to ask... why would you want to do something as silly as that?

You're in Utah county... I think the answer is obvious.

Mini-vans as far as the eye can see.

To me I would look at who your competition is, if everyone around you is doing trucks then don't do trucks, if everyone is doing mini-vans then don't do mini-vans. Of course this is all opinion and not a business plan, I don't buy 20k vehicles, I would think there would be a sweet spot for prices (something like 10-15k) after all the economy is supposed to be down.

FWIW our '09 Altima has 50k miles and has so far only required oil changes, two new tires, and an alignment here in the next few weeks... Oh, and one new o-ring on a TPMS valve.. So, virtually maintenance free and gets 28-31mpg. Best vehicle that I've ever owned.

We are going to be buying a couple trucks, and a few cars, our overhead is low around a $1000 a month and we will be using ksl and autotrader primarily as our sales floor. We have all the paperwork done and as of today all financing is final and we can start buying cars. I like the idea of the Mazda 3 5 door and Hyundai and Toyota cars. We also are looking at a couple single cab Ram 1500 hemi trucks. We basically have to turn all cars in 2 months and this is a second job for us both. I have the convieniance of not financial responsibility, but I have much to gain with this working out. This will be an exciting experience for us both, we are both ex-auto technicians with 20 years auto experience on the other side of it.

Diesel VW's if you can get a hold of them, not sure I would pickup to many full size trucks, market is flooded with them, and gas prices are going to keep rising, probably a tough sale unless you get a screaming deal. I know the new ford focus and festiva are popular, i'd imagine any small hatchback 4 banger, or mid sized family car will be easy to turn around.

I'm no expert but I'd imagine the following cars would sell quickly in your neck of the woods:

- hyundai (Cheap, under $8K)
- kia (cheap, under $5k)
- tacomas (they always sell. A lot of dealers I've talked to say they turn around in a matter of hours, not days)
- subarus
- mini-suv (honda CRV, Rav4, etc)
- older civics ('91-95)

Are you aiming for a certain demographic or price range? Will the lot be visible for passer-bys or will the vehicles be hidden, out of sight? Will you be able to offer financing? I"m thinking financing will really help (it still amazes me how many people finance vehicles).

So we have bought about 10 cars so far..... And sold 2!!
We have sold a 2006 dodge srt8 charger and a 2008 sti
We have the following
2- 2012 fiat 500
2011 Subaru forester
2010 Subaru forester
2011 Subaru impreza
2008 mini cooper s convertible
2006 Subaru legacy outback
1992 dodge Dakota

It's been fun figuring this all out, today is the carmax auction and we will probably pick something up there. I don't know how we ended up with all the subarus, they just fell into place. Right now we are working on the financing side of things starting out with hard to finance people and going from there. It's been fun!!! Hope it stays that way.

Please become a vendor if you are going to list/advertise on RME. It's not fair to others who support the site via vendor subscriptions to allow you to continue this thread. Sorry to be a bummer. :)
