I know there have been a lot of threads lately about passing safety. My truck (84 toyota xtra cab) passed safety just fine, My trouble is the emissions. It was over on the CO. :(

The max for 15 mph is 2.63 and I came in @ 3.98
The max for 25 mph is 2.72 and I came in @ 3.86

What causes high CO levels, and what can I do to help it come up to spec?

Some ideas I had are:
Spark plugs
adjust carb?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

CO is caused by incomplete combustion of the fuel charge, leaning the carb slightly and a slight advance of the timing will help, also a couple bottles of heet will help remove any water that may have accumulated in the fuel system. New Air filter will help too. Be careful how much you do, you can push it from co to NOx

I have your solution. I don't know the answer, but I have a Toyota factory service manual here for a 1984 Toyota Truck/4Runner. It's well-used (read: hammered) but all the info is there for you. FAR superior to the generic Haynes/Chilton's manuals.

Yours if you come get it out of my garage.

If he doesn't want it, I do.

make sure the truck (and cat) are good and hot right before testing. sitting and idling while waiting hurts your chances.

The alcohol is not good for the carb rubber part it will dry them out.
check the air filter and adjust the carb a bit.if you have done your
free retest and don't pass I can help you out.

I've been puckering at the thought of Cache starting emmisions.....Might start next year  . I took ALL the emission "stuff" off mine when I bought it because it was missing pieces and ran like crap. With over 10,000 hours of fine tuning (give or take) I don't think my 20R could run any better, but passing emmisions might be another story. Let us know what you come up with.

My CJ was over on CO, 3.00 was my max and I flagged 4.56 if memory serves correctly. I leaned the hell out of the carb to where it would stumble at idle, got it HOT, then tested. I flagged 0.01 CO. Of course my HC went up, but still within allowable limits. After I got home the carb went back to "normal".

Good luck

Bart, I just checked. There's a book here with your name on it.....

What I've found on the Yota's is a fresh oil change and air filter will cut the CO a bunch. Also, if you're running oversized tires, pump them up to max pressure to take some drag off the dyno. I had mine in perfect running condition. Backed it off the trailer and onto the dyno with the normal 6psi in the tires. Major fail! Pumped em up, and she was clean as a whistle.

Thank you so much for the help and response.

I swapped the plugs out and leaned out the carb. And when I went in the tossed it on the dyno to see where it would read, I was acctually higher in CO than before. But I was really suprised with the customer service of the shop. They grabbed another guy to tune the carb and adjust the timing while the other guy was running it on the dyno until they got it to a level where they were sure it would pass. It did and now I am good to go! :greg:
