Help with Caddy Calipers

Well I've got the D60 disc brake brackets, 77 3/4 ton Chevy Rotors, 78 rear Caddy Eldorado Calipers w/ pads but here is the problem. The calipers have the piston portion hanging out about 3/8" and wont go in any further. I have tried to get them in further by playing w/ the e-brake lever but can't. The rotors are 1.25" thick and I can't turn them down to 1" to clear the piston and pads because then they would be too thin. Am I missing something?

Thanks, Brad Jarrett

I'll try to post pics as soon as I can from a different PC, this one isn't allowing me to right now (won't open up the manage attachments in another window or any window)

They have to be twisted/screwed in farther.

you can rent a tool from autozone for doing such a job.

I brought the Calipers to Autozone and couldn't get them to go in any further so brought the tool home to keep trying. I pulled the red cap out of where the brake line goes in and you can see that the piston is as far back as it can go so I'm stuck. Could these NAPA Calipers be the problem??? The new rotors say they can only be turned down to 1.212" which still leaves me w/ almost 1/4" too much. Are Ford rotors any thinner? What to do.

Thanks, Brad J.

I might be missing something (probably am), but the caddy calipers might only be able to be used with 1/2 ton rotors. I know my old 6-lug disc brakes had the option of the 1" or 1.25" rotor, and I needed the 1" to go with my Monte Carlo calipers, which are very similar to the caddy ones but without the E-brake.

Do you know of any other people that are using those calipers with 8-lug rotors?

You are quite right about the calipers only not going in all the way. I started with monte carlo calipers on the back of my EB and they would fit stock ford 1 1/8" rotors. When I went to the caddy setup I had to switch to Jeep rotors because they are thinner. Sorry I can't help you with your bolt pattern unless it is 5 on 5.5 that is 6 cyl cj7, 6 lug is v8 cj7 both their rotors are under 1".

They may bot go in any further, but the pistons do screw in. Grab onto them with a channel lock plier in its widest jaw setting and see if you can screw them in any further.

I'm running 78' caddy calipers, 8 lug 10 bolt and dana 44 8 lug rotors will work...

I tried with the caliper piston compressor/ rotator tool. It would spin the front and rear of the piston but would not go in any futher. The employee at Autozone tried also, piston would spin but not go in any further. I'm stumped.

Thanks, Brad J.

That might be the problem, I got 78 calipers at first but didn't really look at them until I got the disc brake bracket. The bracket is set up for 7" wide mounting screws but the the 78 calipers were 5.5" (?). So I exchanged the calipers for the older style (77?) that are identical to the 3/4 ton front chevy calipers. So if thats the case I can get the later style calipers and make my own disc brake bracket or weld a little metal onto mine to fit the smaller calipers. Randy, can you check your calipers to see if they are 5.5" or 7" apart on the bolts. Thanks guys for the help.

The Scout isn't here, so I can't check for ya. SORRY 76',77',78' are all the same caliper and yes they are the same as a 3/4 caliper minus the e-brake
