Hole in the Rock

Has anyone discussed with the BLM, or whoever would need to be contacted, about shoring up the bypass as it is now? I would think that it would be nicer to be able to keep the trail as it is now, if possible.

Agreed, that's a lot of fun stuff just beyond that bypass.

I did send the BLM an email about two weeks ago and they called me back to make sure they knew just where I was talking about. Then they said they would get my message to the specific person over that area and they would be getting back with me. no word yet though.

33's and a good driver if you plan to do the Rincon, otherwise 31's. We took an FJ62 on 33's, open diffed through, no assistance needed (other than slipping into a washout). A rear locker would make things alot more comfortable.

Good, thanks. Sounds like my 32s and open diffs will be fine then, if not ideal. Will need to try to work a trip into my schedule.

I put in another email just this past week but haven't heard anything from them yet. I will plan on calling sometime this week. I'd also like to see the original trail somehow shored up so as to not have to bypass those two canyons. We are planning another trip down there in April.

Appreciate you doing that. Let us know if we can all help out. I'd bet that we could get a groupd down there to help fix the original bypass!

Well I just got of the phone with the Monticello BLM field office. I just asked them what the status was or if there were any plans to help salvage the Lake canyon washout leg of the HITR trail. He said there was another guy that is out of the office today that he will have call me back on it but he did say that he thinks that the county is the one who did this last bypass and that they are aware of the sluff off being right up to it again. Hopefully this other guy will call me back and we can get the low down....

I think we were the first group down there through the new pass. When we stayed in Hanksville at the Tuff Shed Motel (don't know the real name) the parking lot still had a foot of mud in it.

We were there the Friday after Lake Canyon got washed out. So we were on the first bypass that was still in Lake Canyon, but different from the original way.

Update: I spoke with the BLM gal about the washout last week at the Monticello RMP meeting, they have re-routed the trail to avoid the bypass area, so its good to go.

However, I'm not sure if the sign on the other side is still there or not? If it is they might leave it as a "spur" to go check out the one-time lake. Not sure how they re-routed the trail, its alot further back then the bypass we were all using in the meantime (no climb up the steep slickrock/sand face).

Kind've sucks they couldn't keep the trail close to the old lake, but the terrain just didn't permit it, that canyon is going to keep washing out for the years to come.
