Holley projection tuning

I have 78 waggy with holley projectin setup on it. I bought it with the set up on it and I need to know if some one has some pointers on typing it

My 1st pointer would be to dump it.... Seriously, the Holley Projection was a great idea, but the end product was very lacking. The opened loop system doesn't allow the computer to 'watch' how much or little fuel it's feeding to the engine. I ran one & it was the biggest POS ever. It left me stranded a few times and I spent a lot of money replacing parts trying to get it to work better. I also spent hours on the phone with the Holley tech dept, they were of no help at all. Projection is a joke, an unreliable source for fuel injection. You'd be much better off using a old GM TBI system and adapting it to your motor.

I don't know Greg, mine runs great and always has. I don't think I would choose the same system again today, but I wouldn't dump it either.

You're the first I've heard of then. I wheeled with a guy this weekend that has the 2 barrel system on his V8 CJ. It kept loading up, misfiring, stumbling and then dieing. It reminded me of how frustrating my Holley Projection was. I sold mine for $50 and felt bad for the buyer.... after letting him know how bad it was.

Is yours running a O2 sensor or opened loop like it comes out of the box?

Open loop out of the box. Honestly I have never had trouble, it has always run great, and it is over ten years old.

I had spent hours tuning mine... it would run fine for 30 minutes afterward, then start having problems again. I had abandoned my CJ a few times & had to walk home a handful of miles after it wouldn't start back up. That was the most frustrating thing I ever had to deal with, there were times I wished it would burn to the ground. It was great, when it worked. But when it didn't, there wasn't much you could do.

One thing I never did, which I thought would have helped was to buy the add-on O2 sensor. I thought it was totally insane that Holley would sell the O2 sensor as an optional, additional item.

I have known a few people with the holley proinjection and have yet to see one that actually worked. I would never buy or run one for sure.

Tell us how you really feel Greg;)

I have run the original PJ for over 10 years. It has served me well. I installed a set up several before I did my own. So I learned a few tricks on the way....
It has served me well for many years, until the injectors themselves went bad, and are no longer available. I am still keeping my comp as a back up. I now have a newer holley TB and I am setting it up with megasquirt.

Back to tuning. I have said it many times and will say it again. The Holley computer is VERY picky about power and ground!!!!!!! You can not reduntly ground too much!! Seriousely, bat to frame to motor to body, to bat. I ground the comp to the same bolt that I use to ground the body to the rest of the ground loop. Then make sure you have Clean power and at LEAST 12 volts at all times. Stick a meter in your power line under driving conditions and make sure even with accessories on, it never drops below 12!

Then wire the fuel pump via a relay triggered by the ignition, not the computer. At least on the older units, holley varied the ground to control the pump and it never works well. Find an ignition wire the is hot in the start AND run positions and use it to trigger a relay to send power directly to the pump. Also a very good idea to use a better pump.

Then run atleast a 5/16" return line and there will never be a pressure issue, and no reason to vary the flow of the pump.

Now the "tuning" can start. With out doing the above things, tuning will not get you what you want. Everything is controled by very slight voltage changes, so if there are power problems, the tunes will change....

Do you have the open or closed loop computer? (Dials)

I ran a Holley for years with good results. I wanted a better system so I tried the Howell which was a POS and exspensive. I returned the Howell and went back to the Holley.

I was going to say the same thing as rckcrlr - well, kinda... I forgot about the grounding and voltage stuff. But that relay on the fuel pump and the return line are biggies. But so are the ground and voltage.

I definately wouldn't dump it... Closed loop is definately nice, but if set up right the open loop works great too.

My dad just took one of the closed loop computers (bought it from Tacoma) and adapted it to work with a old Hilborn setup. Yeah, that's right.. He took 8 injectors wired them all together so they all fire at the same time and put them in custom made stacks with injector bungs. He then made an aluminum distro block to feed the 8 injectors and put it by the old linkage, which now holds the TPS. This is all in a 31? coupe that he's building. I've gotta get a picture of this... I thought I had taken one last time I was there, but I can't find it.

the guy who set my unit up was not a sharp mechanic he rigged the ECU up to with closed and open by a switch looks like I wll need to rework all my wires and double check all my connections. I would like to run strickly closed unit ( if you guys suggest this) the gy who set this up even put a switch on the throttle body to shut off the o2 sensor because he had problems with it idling. I did find the instalation manual

Sounds to me like the first order of business is to fix the rats nest and get rid of the 'extra' switches.

As for open or closed, it's all preference, IMO. They both work well. Granted, the closed is better - because it's constantly adjusting the fuel mixture - but definately not the only way to make it run right or good.
