my brother has a cadillac 500 CID sitting in the shop. :greg: he was going to put it in his 29 model A tudor sedan, but decided it was too big.

I like the 500 inch Caddys, I rebuilt one years ago. Would it not have fit?

I don't know that there's a (stock) motor that rivals a 500 caddy, they make ton's of power right where you need it. I've got a 426 caddy.

I'd go BBC oval port either 396 or 402 little snappier then the 454 with the shorther stroke or Ton's more common then a 409 (even tho- a 409 is sweet) They're easy and relatively inexpensive to build. and of course there is nothing like an iron lung on a hotrod.

trans either 700r or 4l60 something with an overdrive so you can go down the highway.

another alternative would be see if you can find a ls6 motor from a new GTO and a 6 speed, they're lightweight and sweet, I've seen them as low as 6000 complete with a harness and ecu. 425 ponies from a small block! factory.

Big block would be cool... we'll see. I don't care to have OD, want to keep is simple. Same goes for a LS6 and a 6 speed, they're cool parts but not what I want for this one. I want old stuff... mean, old, loud muscle. :D

it would fit ok, but its not what he wanted. the valve covers stuck out beyond the cowl.

selling points....
it ran when it was pulled a couple years ago. dont they have something like 450+ stock HP and 500ft lbs from the factory, the lightest big block ever produced etc....

if your interested let me know. it sure looked good in that model a.:greg:

he would probably let it go for a couple hundred bucks

the 472 and 500 caddy are only about 90 lbs heavier then a small block if you get rid of the 70 lb intake they're only 20, they're 3" wider and 3.5" longer, but they have a distributor in the front, Not the back, so firewall clearances are good.

I've got a 472 and a 400 trans in good working order in a derby car (easily makes 500ftlbs. It's a monster, It's been hot, but it's a caddy they'll run up to 340 with little or no damage.

If you're going rat roddin' there's no replacing a well built sbc with a set of ram horn manifolds, and a muncie m22 rockcrusher, with sidepipes, it's classic.

Thanks! Braden is right, there will be no body work on this one, just a coat of primer.

Nice find!!

I have thought about building a hot rod, but I suck at boddy work and that is most of the build.

Tacoma asked for some pics of the project and since he's hooking me up with a transmission, I'm going to do as he asked. ;) There's been a slight deviation in my build plans after finding something simpler.

About a month ago I picked up a Model T body & ever since I've been keeping a keen eye out for pieces & parts that might come in handy. Last week my in-laws were up visiting and while taking them on a ride thru the country my mom-in-law spotted something neat... an old car tub sitting in front of a antique store.

The store was closed, but I wrote the number down & called back later on. The gal at the desk claimed it was a Willys. I decided to head back yesterday, you know... just to check it out again. It looks like it was a 4 door car, untill someone cut the 2nd set of doors off. There are door latches against the B-pillar, looks like the car had early suicide doors! The gal also claimed it was a mid-30's car, which I'm not too sure about either.

Here's the pics-

After drooling over it and having a vision of the completed project in my head, it ended up in the back of my truck... cost, $150. Thankfully I have a understanding wife, or I'd be sleeping in the new car! After talking it over with the wife, I decided to build this one first. See, this whole hot rod thing is somewhat new to me, and I think this will be an easier project than the Model T will be, so I'm going to break myself in with this one, keep it simple with an opened top and build it on the cheap. I want to do the Model T right & I think the experience of having something to practice on will be beneficial in the long run.

My build plans are pretty loose, but I'm going to build my frame from 2x3 rectangular tube, clean up the body a bit where it was cut & patch the holes, fab my own doors, the windshield frame, fab the bed from scratch (I'm going to use a Jeep Willys tailgate), channel the body down over the frame about 3". I just made a call to pickup a 500 inch Caddy motor from ESKJAE's brother, picked up a BOP TH400 from Tacoma, found a Early Bronco 9" that'll put the torque to the tires, and thats about all I have so far.

After some research, the body is actually a Dodge Brothers car. The Dodge Brothers kept this same style for a handful of years, so it could be anywhere from the mid-teens to the early/mid-20's.

Basically this is going to end up as the Dodge-bodied 'truck' that Dodge never built. Opened top, short windshield and a small pickup bed. Of course the parts are going to come from all diffrent sources and the suspension is going to be more Ford in the front, with coils & a 4 link in the back. The body is going to sit down over the frame and the frame will be no more than a few inches off the ground.

Thanks for the pics!!

I can see that turning out pretty sweet! I'm jonesing so hard for some fast little beater right now... but my tastes run towards the early 50's-late 60's stuff....

Looking forward to seeing this thing DONE! You should check out that flip-framed white Dodge in Hot Rod?, pretty damn sweet, said it was like $5k to build or something.

Youbetcha'! I hope it turns out like I think it will, either way it'll be a fun build.

Yeah, I have that article... the underslung roadster. I dig that thing, the frame no more than 2-3" off the ground & those 20" wheels are badass! I'm hoping to be around $2k into this one by the time it's 'done'. We'll see, I need to keep track of the purchases. Mine will be nowhere near as purdy as his is.

I picked up some frame material, two pieces of 2"x3" .120 wall rectangular tube, 13 feet long. Since I now had the beginning of the frame, I just had to lay the body on top of it & see how everything measured up.

The frame rails look like they'll be 19" apart (hopefully the Caddy 500 & TH400 will fit in between!), and the rear portion is going to 'Z' up behind the body, around 12-14" high. This'll make room for the axle & coil springs.

I layed a wheel & axle out to begin taking measurements for the wheelbase, I like the look of a long front. I may shorten up the front, depending on how the motor fits lenghtwise. These pics have the wheelbase at 124". I dig it. :greg:

I started on the windshield frame, didn't have enough material for the other side though. :-\ It's round 7/8" x .120 wall tube, I heated it up & bent it to 65*. Looks like a good angle for the windshield.
