How an oil accumulator works

Not a great idea for a buggy I tipped mine hard to the passenger side and before I knew what was happening I squirted 3 quarts out of the breather then when I got level again and the accumulator was full my nice fancy new engine was running on two quarts of oil

I got one of these on my water heater :)

so you pre-lube and now have 2 extra quarts of oil in the engine?
Do you need an oversized sump to use this?

No need for a bigger pan or sump it's just extra oil to help keep oil pressure constant, I have played with the idea for hydro steering on the pressure side to help during high demand situations or fast actions but nothing yet

Accumulators are awesome, especially for engines, (pre lube and short low eng psi situations).
The haul trucks I work on at work have 4 giant accumulators on them. 2 for braking and 2 for steering. Mainly for safety. You can get 2 full turns lock to lock on the steering if the engine dies. But like aaronpaige it has other advantages, high demand, fast action and load shock.
I also have thought about one on a seeing system for a jeep/buggie but w a factory style pump it won't work. It needs to be plumbed between the pump and the pressure relief valve (somewhere w constant pressure). Factory style pumps have pressure relief valves built in. It would have to be a system like the fancy high end Howe system w the pump and valve are separate. Maybe one day I'll build one. Lol

Sorry let me clarify, after reading my last post it could be interpreted a little wrong.
On a steering system, after the psi relief valve, there is only pressure while steering. When not steering the steering box or orbital valve have an open center and just free flow back to tank. Hope this makes more sense. Haha

They work.

I got a stainless solenoid valve with viton o rings. Rated at 290 temp. For only 45 bucks on ebay. Works great.

On a steering system, i was thinking about it this morning and even if it was plumbed between pump and psi relief valve there would still be no pressure. If the steering valve is open center it just flows back to tank so I'm not sure how to do that. Maybe I should just stop posting late at night. Haha.

On an engine oil system I really like what UFAB was saying about an electronic solenoid. That would be the way to do it. Do you have any pics of your system? Would be really cool to see.
