How do I assign COM ports?

I'm trying to link my GPS to a new to me topo software (TOPO!), I can't get it to recognize the GPS. I plug the GPS into the computer using a USB cable, it acknowleges its connected. The TOPO! software allows me to choose which COM port to assign, COM1 thru COM8, I attempt to use all of them and it shows up as "The COM port is in use by another application.".

Thoughts or suggestions?

This may not do what you need, but it may help you trouble shoot the problem.

Device Manager
expand the ports
right click on a COM port
properties
advanced tab

start looking for conflicts or something you can remove or disable to free up a port

TOPO! version 3 or 4? Which GPS? USB or Serial port? USB wouldn't work on my copy of version 3. I had to buy version 4 AND download an update from the web in order to use my Garmin 60Cx.

I think thats the issue... I have version 3.4.3 which was a free update from my original 2.7, I think I need one of the 4.x.x versions to read USB.

If you have a serial Port pick up a Serial to USB adapter (like $15)... If not then Go buy 4.X and sell me your 3.x for cheap ;)

Oh on a side note do you usually run the Disks or Mount ISO's to make it a bit faster than having to use Disk 3 now Disk 4 Now disk 3 again...?

A virtual COM driver might work for you to get your older version to work... but I don't know what virtual com software to suggest. A google search turns up a few options. :)

No serial port, so I'll let you know when 3.x is for sale :D I just run it off the Utah disk, I've never figured out how to mount it all on the computer. I have my preferred software all mounted (AllTopo), so it moves through the maps smoothly.

Do this:

" Installing Map Data on Hard Drives:

With today’s larger hard drives, it may make sense to load map data on your drive rather than handling CDs each time you use TOPO! You can install as much or as little map data as you desire.

First, please ensure you are running the latest version of your product by visiting our downloads page. Upgrade as necessary.

Then:

- Open TOPO!

- Click on View > TOPO! Product Setup > Copy Data CD-ROMs to Hard Drive

- You will be prompted to insert a TOPO! Data CD to copy, then click ‘OK’

- You can load as many or as few TOPO! Data CDs as you like."

Then buy this: http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/product/247/4022/120.html

Ok, like I said, this has been dealt with on RME before, your version of TOPO! does not know what usb ports are. Someone wrote a little program that makes a USB port pretend it is a serial port. I'll see if I can find it now.

I think I need to buy the upgrade first as I don't have a "TOPO! Product Setup" in my View drop down list. Seems upgrading would solve all my issues.

The upgrade is $20.

Kurt, your right, Version 3.xx doesn't have that option. This is the way I did it with V3

"Q: Can I load maps from the CDs on to my hard drive?

A: Yes. TOPO! 3.3 has three primary ways of locating maps on your hard
drive. First, it looks for maps stored in the "TPO_DATA" folder, which is
located in your installation folder (for instance, "C:\TOPO!\TPO_DATA").
You can copy as many individual maps (files with a .tpq extension) from
your CDs to the TPO_DATA folder as you want. Second, it looks for maps
in folders that you specify through the Map Folders dialog. You can
open this dialog by going to the Preferences menu and selecting
Map Folders. You can then specify up to ten folders where TOPO! 3.3
should look for maps. Third, it will find data folders that are copied to
the root of any of your local drives or mapped network drives. On each TOPO!
CD there is a folder that looks like "XX_Dnn" where XX is a state prefix
and nn is a number. If you copy that entire folder to the root of your
hard drive, TOPO! 3.3 will find it. For this method to work, you must copy
the entire folder.

Examples:
1) You own TOPO! California and you want to load the contents of Disk 4 to
your hard drive for faster access. To do this, copy "CA_D04" from the CD
to "C:\CA_D04" (or to the root any other local drive). Alternatively,
you can copy it to your TPO_DATA folder (for instance, "C:\TOPO!\TPO_DATA\CA_D04").
Another alternative is to create a new folder (for instance, "C:\My Maps")
and copy "CA_D04" to it. You would then need to select "C:\My Maps" in the
Map Folders dialog to tell TOPO! to include this folder when it searches
for maps. "

I've been using the GPSGate with Vista and XP and the older TOPO.
Sometimes I have to restart the topo program to get it to pick up the gps.
Garmin never has updated spanner to work with vista.

I just checked my e-mail and got a notice of an update to gpsgate
so maybe that will fix the restart problem.
