How To Capture a Screen Shot of your Desktop or the Active Window in Windows
Here's How:

1. Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard.

2. Open an image editing program, such as Microsoft Paint.

3. Go to the Edit menu and choose Paste.

4. If prompted to enlarge the image, choose Yes.

5. Optional: Use your image editor's crop tool to crop out unnecessary portions of the screen shot.

6. Go to the File Menu and choose Save As.

7. Navigate to the folder where you want to save the image.

8. Type a file name for the image.

9. Select a file type.

10. Click the Save button.
Tips:

1. Hold the Alt key down while pressing Print Screen to capture only the active window.
2. Generally the GIF format works best when saving screen shots of application windows. The JPEG format usually makes screen shots (especially those with text) blurry, blotchy and discolored.

FYI

Print Screen = your whole monitor

ALT + Print Screen = Just the active window

I don't believe the prnt screen thing will work with video. Not sure why. I've never been able to do it. When i've needed a screenshot of a video, i usually just open the video up in something like movie maker if you have windows and get a snapshot there. On the version of movie maker that came with windows, there is a little camera icon below the playback area and it does the snapshot. Hope I didn't totally confuse you. This might not be the best way but it has worked for me. Hope that is helpful.

Well, I already did it once today. Why can't I do it again?
Movie maker... don't even know if I have that...

Movie maker should come with windows XP. No idea why you've been able to do it early and not again. I've never had luck print screening video.

This VLC, do I just open up the movie in there and do a regular screen capture?

might be a little different on a PC but on my machine all I have to do is pause the show where I want the pic taken then in the video menu item there is an option that says "Snapshot" it takes a picture of the current screen and saves it as a file to your desktop (I think you can set where it saves it).

turn off your video card's acceleration and you can do a screen capture without anything special

Yup, or an easier way is to open one video and it ties up your hardware, then open the one you want cap from (it will be running software) and you can cap until your harts content.

VLC is nice and all, but I mostly use Media Player Classic

Hickey, it's most likely on that disc I gave you.
