OK I just bought an XJ :Dand the guy tells me it has a tera low kit in it. It feels like it has a broken shift fork. :busted: First off How do I identify if it really isa tera? Second Has any one had experiences similiar to this?

The Teralow uses a different front case half compared to a regular NP231. Easy way to tell is that, if memory serves, it says Teralow on it.

Some of the early TeraLow's had a black case also. Take a pic of the case and post it here.

I forgot that they changed out the one half of the case. For some reason I was just thinking of the sungear and the internal gears.

yep , lift the tires of the ground ( jack stands) , put in 4-LO , have someone spin a tire and count the revs of the drive line to tire

that will just give you the Differential gearing. and if the axle is open then the Drive line won't even spin in 4-LO unless you plan on rotating the tranny and the engine too but that would bring the suck.

you would need to count the revolutions on the input side of the Tcase VS those on the output side of the Tcase to do such a thing..

you could figure it out if you know: Tire size, Axle gearing, Transmission gearing, what gear the Tranny is in, Current engine RPM and actual speed.

As posted above, the Teralow kit replaces the front half of the case - housing & all - it's easy to tell if you know what the stock NP231 case looks like. Not sure what a broken shift fork feels like. If it has the Tera 2LO kit it it too, you can pull the shift lever past the 4 low position to have 2 wheel drive low range.

FYI - the Teralow kit does NOT like high RPMs - I think the owners manual recommends when in low range not exceeding something like 2500 rpm AND not using 4th & 5th gears (manual). You'll find the case noisy compared to a stock NP231 - but that's normal.

I am picking it up tonight and will post the pics and findings tomorrow. The case is sitting in the back of it so I will check the case at pickup.:) Hopefully a simple fix.

Well it is not a teralow.:-\ 2.73:1 according to spinning the shaft and counting revolutions. The 'case actually feels pretty solid. A question I have n ow is how much slack should the chain have in it? It does feel like a little more play than my 2002 TJ.
