How good is your Jeeps cage?

Found this on another forum, really made me start thinking of working on mine a little. The guys said it was a 70mph rollover. I really don't feel that safe anymore inside my half ass stock cage.

I already knew the stock sport bar was not a real cage but I thought they were supposed to be acceptable in a real crash, to me this kind of damage is not acceptable.

You had me worried. I first looked at the pics without reading and it looked just like your Jeep. I would think any car, truck or SUV could look like that after a 70mph roll if they rolled enough times. This just looks worse since the top is off and someone probably threw in all the debris from the crash site inside when they towed it. Probably need a cage designed for high speed desert racing.

what caused that accident?

He didn't say. From looking at the pictures, had there been someone in the passenger seat I'm guessing that person would have been killed.

I've been looking at cages and Poison Spyder probably offers the one I like the most for a bolt in/weld in but cost is already right around $1000. I don't know how much more than that it would cost to have one made. This is one area where I don't trust my welding skills enough to make a full on cage.

A good cage is a must. I wouldn't even think of wheeling like I do without one.

A 70mph rollover will do that kind of damage to almost any stock style vehicle.
You are talking about some serious forces at 70mph and nothing less than a full racing cage will protect you well in a situation like that.
Need proof? look at this video:

This is a roll Roger Lovel took on actual road surface. In a full race rig and look at the damage.

I think most cages, unless designed for a high-speed type wreck, are going to fall in the 'false sense of security' category when talking about structural abilities for 70mph rolling. I'm no expert, but I'd be willing to bet that many makes and models of vehicles would end up looking very similar in a 70mph roll/wreck.

*edit.. Gravesdigger beat me to the punch with the same idea.

I agree that a good cage is a must. Up until now I have felt comfortable with the stock sport bar. Everytime I go out though I push my limits a little more and eventually I know what is bound to happen. I've managed to go so far with only a few close calls as far as rollovers go and my JK is weighing in over 5000lbs so the stock cage just isn't enough anymore.

I completely agree but even just making some decent improvements to the stock bar will help.

I've been looking at cages and Poison Spyder...

Are you talking about their TJ kit? If so, they are the most worthless things ever. I've personally seen one collapse completely in a roll and it offered the driver no appreciable protection. I wouldn't trust one any more than I'd trust the stock cage.

No the JK one seems to be one of the few that at least ties into floor up front. But like I said I really dont like any of the available kits. Just not enough extra protection for the money.

oddly enough xj's actually do reasonably well in rollovers but if you roll anything at 70 you're in trouble. i'd still rather be in a vehicle with an attached roof over a "real" jeep. plus i think the unibody helps absorbs the shock

congratulations, you found a picture of an xj that was rolled at freeway speed. besides, i agree with the statement above- you're in trouble if you roll at freeway speed even if you're in a full race vehicle.

sorry i commented on this thread
