How long is too long? (wordy post)

This may get a little wordy, I will try to keep it short...

Last winter I decided to plan an automatic tranny conversion in my already V-8 converted FJ-40. I have a friend with a TH350/ NP205, and he is pleased with it, so I figured I would follow suit. I took my time saving up cash and finding parts, and in mid January this year I was about ready. I planned on having the tranny and t-case in, so all that needed done was to build a cross member and re-lenghten the drivelines.

Well, I pulled the old tranny and t-case, and got busy. I planned on twin-sticking the t-case myself, but later determined it may not be the best idea since I had not done it, and did not closely know anyone who had done the work themselves. I decided now I will just have someone else twin-stick it and fab up the crossmember.

I put the tranny and t-case in, then just held it up by a ratchet strap, planning to tow it to a shop or garage. I soon learned from a friend who is knowledgable in muscle cars, that I improperly set up the torque converter/ tranny. I bolted on the torque converter, then the tranny, and should have done it in reverse order.

So now I decide I want the unlucky soul who works on my cruiser to pull the tranny and redo the installation, as well as twin-stick the t-case, build the crossmember, and re-lengthen the drivelines. I had planned on having done more of the work myself, but without room and knowledge, I gave up and figured I would pay someone to do what was originally planned, and fix my errors.

Here is the meat of the story, the previous was just the introduction....

So a friend recommends his friend to do the work. I think, great, he can get me in quicker than a shop, and I have heard he is a very knowledgable fabricator/ mechanic. I take the vehicle to his place mid February, and he states the work will take him about 3 weeks. I say, don't rush, because he has other vehicles to work on which want to make it to the Jeep Safari, and I wasn't going, so I didn't care. I also wanted to have another month or so to be sure I had the cash to pay him.

Well, fast forward from February until now. I STILL DO NOT HAVE MY VEHICLE BACK! This is the 8th month. I try to subtley (sp?) tell him I want it done, but I don't want to be an a$$. He has some legitimate reasons it has taken some extra time, but I just don't think 8 months is appropriate. I want it back finished.

I was promised it would be done before October 1, then it would be done last week, now he won't commit to when it will be finished. What should I do or say?

I believe this individual has a user name on this BB, so some of you know him. I am not trying to speak ill of anyone, I just think 8 months is a little too long. I missed the entire summer, and now my wife wants me to sell the thing, so I may never get to drive it with the top off again :mad2: .

Suggestions? Comments?

Don't be afraid of being an ass. You have every right to having your rig done by now. Tell him to either finish it or give it back and don't pay him.

My main concern is getting it finished, and he has the capability to finish it quicker than anyone else because it is already there. It cannot be driven right now, and I don't have a truck and trailer. I can get access to one, but it is a pain because I work odd hours.

Keep the suggestions/ comments coming.

I'd say tell him straight up that you need it done, and 8 months is long enough. Try to word it so you don't come off as an ass--but chances are good he'll get defensive anyway, because he feels guilty for not finishing it already and you'll be bringing it up....

If you get it back fast enough, and can take your wife wheelin, then maybe she won't want you to sell it. :)

Wow, you are patient. Maybe he is taking advantage of your niceness???

Sounds like he's got you in a tough spot. I would find someone else to do the work. See if they can go pick it up for you and keep it real professional. If you pre-schedule with the tow companies when things are slow they can be very reasonably priced. I would bet you could get it towed to another shop for less than $50.

WOW!!! that job that you described (pull the tranny and re-install correctly, twinstick the t-case, and build a crossmember) is a single day job...even for me  given its a single person and they had multiple vehicles a week should have been plenty, three weeks is very generous, and 8 months is rediculous. I wouldn't worry about being an ass, it's not like you plan to use him in the future right???

Let me clarify that this is not a shop. It is a person who works a full time job, and is just doing this on the side.

So Supergper, you want some work to do if this guy falls through? I am told the tranny has been put together correct, the drivelines are done, and it is twin sticked. The t-case may need put back on, and the crossmember needs finished.

She has been wheeling in it since we met (excep this year of course), but for financial reasons it may be best to sell it. My family is quickly outgrowing it anyway with a second kid on the way, and two full size dogs, we won't be taking it camping like we used to.

I'd just tell him you need to pick it up on day....10-21-05 (whenever). If it's done, you'll be glad to pay him for it, but if it's not, you'll take it that day anyway.

That gives him a semi-reasonable deadline that he can choose to meet and give him and you some closure. Yell if you need some help picking it up.....

Well, I left a message on his cell phone tonight stating I will pick it up on the 25th, finished or not. I figured 2 more weekends should be plenty of time, and I might be able to hold out that long.

I don't know why, but these last couple weeks have been driving me crazy not having it. I hope when I pick it up the 25th that it is completed so I don't have to drag it off somewhere else and wait some more -_- .
