Caleb, you missed the part where I said,

7k load in that price range, get a 3/4 or 1 ton. gas or diesel the trucks are just setup so much better for the load. Lower axle gears, bigger brakes, and bigger trans.

That's a lot of tongue weight.

While a 3/4 or 1 Ton would handle it much more easily, modern 1/2 Tons should handle a 7k load no problem. I towed a 10k lb trailer without any problem at all in my Tundra:

If I didn't mind 4-6mpg, 75 up Spanish Fork Canyon was no sweat. I did have air bags and a heavy duty equalizer hitch which helped tremendously with sway and keeping it level. But stopping and going, the truck was all stock and had no problem. Granted, the Tundra's running gear is as large or larger than most 3/4-1 Tons.

I agree completely that a modern 1/2 ton can do it. But, that Tundra is likely over 3x the OP's stated budget.

So after driving some trucks diesel and gassers. I just don't think i want to give up my truck. I love the options my truck has with the heated leather seats power everything and it is just a fun truck to drive. Do you guys think if i put bags on the back and some tow mirrors my current truck will suit me better? I know i will need to step up to a bigger truck but for what i have to spend now it just doesn't seem like i can find anything worth pulling the trigger on. I am thinking keep the truck for a couple years and wait tell i can spend 20k or so on a nice tow rig. Do you think a 1/2 ton will handle my needs or should i compermise something not as nice as my current truck?

I can't tell from your pic but are you using a weight distribution hitch? If not, go spend the money and get a nice one. That will make all the difference in how you truck handles that trailer. If you do have one, you need to adjust it properly, your truck truck shouldn't be sagging that much. Your truck should be able to handle that load, no problem. Also, airbags are only a couple hundred, get some, they will help too. My truck had 4.30 gears, maybe regear if you aren't already 4.10 or lower (you may be able to get by with 3.73). The reality is, I bet you could spend a couple thousand and be just fine with your current truck.

Yes i am using a weight distribution hitch. When i first put the trailer on before i connect the arms from the hitch to the trailer the arms are about touching the ground. I have to use the tool and me and my wife give it everything we have to get them high enough to connect to the trailer. I will have to look in to how to properly set them up since they were set up for the past owner of the trailers truck that was a 3/4 ton. I think air bags is a must though. Thanks for the advise...

After watching some video on how to use the equalizer hitch I am sure it is not set up right for my truck. thanks caleb I would of not thought of that since I am still real new to this towing thing. I am going to get it adjusted her soon and see how it pulls. Then I can go from there to see if my truck will handle the load.

If you want to test drive a diesel with your trailer hooked up I would be happy to help you out. Mine is old and gutless compared to the new stuff but it will still amaze you pulling a grade.

I know you mention wanting a 98' or newer, but I would highly recommend the 94.5-97 powerstrokes. Get one with a 5spd in it. Upgrade the clutch, install new up-pipe gaskets, replace the glow plugs and relay, and it will be good to go. Even injectors are less $1000 to replace, but in most cases new o-rings is all you will need. You should be able to find one with around 200K for $5000 or less in good shape. They are much cheaper to maintain and fix that the Cummins trucks of the same era as well. They will tow that camper with ease.
