How much does size matter?

I was in GRS driveline shop this morning getting my font drive shop rebuilt, the cv was worn out, They put a new kit in it while I waited and I was out in about 15 min. $70 no big deal. However when the guy there asked me what it was out of and what axles I had I informed him a Zj with tera 60 rear and a tera 50 front. He got a concerned look on his face and said that I should really go to 2" drivelines with those axles. I know nothing about drivelines. School me!

In theory (ok... more than in theory) the larger diameter the tubing is, the stronger it is. Why it has anything to do with the axles it is turning is beyond me... Unless he is using the axles to gauge how the Jeep is gonna be driven...?

That was my thought.

I would think that the thickness of the wall tubing would be more important than size.

I would say to a point. Trying to come up with an example and the best I can come up with is PVC pipe. A 1/2" PVC pipe flexes far more than a 3/4". With a driveline I would think you want to avoid flex because that would lead to the shaft twisting into a pretzel. I would also argue that a larger diameter tube would be easier to find with thicker walls than a smaller diameter.

I'm sure we'll get one of the Engineers on here to pipe in but I'm pretty sure that a larger diameter is stronger than smaller in a thick walled tubing. Basically, you can go larger diameter with thinner wall resulting in less weight, which is a pretty big deal for a drive line. (So, weight/ft, larger diameter would be stronger)

I am sure you are right, but it is probably a compromise small and large. I bet a solid round piece of stock would twist in hurry but so would a thin wall larger piece.

I'd say there are some variables involved, but weight for weight I think larger diameter is stronger than smaller w/ thicker wall. I'm guessing that it must be related to the surface area.

Agreed, now if we could get one of these smart guys to verify this thought :D

(Come on Kurt or Brett, Maverick) :p

Here is a little graph showing the relationship between the inside radius and the outside radius as it relates to strength (J).
