Front Dana 60, Dodge spend about $4,000.00 on it. Rear Corp. 14 bolt FF about $2,000.00. Now, I will explain why I spend so much. The front was built for me by Boyce Military Equipment and was shipped to me complete hub to hub. All I had to do was bolt it into the truck. Built with 5.13 gears, detroit locker, and made for a 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern and my 15" wheels bolted right up to it. The rear axle I built using rear disk brakes and I also had some hubs machined for a 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern and the rear roters and calipers are off of an El Camino so my 15" wheels again bolted right up to them. The rear axle also uses 5.13 gears but instead of a locker I went with a spool. Less moving parts so there is less to break. I guess that maks me the third person to spend $5,000.00 or more.

Well I got my Dana 60 and 14 bolt for 1450.00, but had to buy an entire running k5. I sold a good running 350 for 500.00, and the sm465 for 75.00 also will scrap the rest for 150.00 so I'm in to mine 725.00 and will run them as I got them. I figure they lasted the last 20-30 years just fine why mess with them.

Reading this made me go through my reciept pile, I figured I was kinda getting things done on the cheap side cause I do most of my own work, but reciepts don't lie.
Dana 60 and 14 bolt where taken as partial trade as payment for a prevoius rig I had allready built up and sold. Ill tell ya right now I had no idea how much time and money I had tied up into my old K5 untill I started another build. I guess you don't really relize how much you spend when it's spread out over a long peroid of time.

Dana 60 specs, allready equiped with 4:46 gears

Parts purchased!
Detroit locker: $500
Carrier, gear install kit: $165.33
1350 yoke: $60
King pin rebuild parts/ U-bolts/ Shimes: $218
Steering parts/ Tube adapters/ TRE ends: $107.96
ORD high steer arms with stud kit: $385
PSC hydro assist ram: $193
Brake job/ rotor turn/ Pads/ New calipers: $154.47

Guess what I still need to replace the brake pads and calipers and I havent even gotten into shaft and U-joint upgrades yet!

14 Bolt, Allready equiped with 4:56 gears

Ruff stuff disk brake brackets: $60
New calipers, rotors for disk swap: $200
Detroit locker: $400
Soilid Ind. diff cover: $89

and don't forget the cost of what it takes to get them under your rig! Brake lines, drive shafts, shocks, coil springs, leaf springs, coil overs, tubing, rod ends, the list keeps going! Needless to say I won't be selling my rig any time soon.

O-ya! I havent even bugun to start building up my spare parts pile, This thread is really starting to depress me.

This poll indeed will be interesting, but I wonder how accurate it will be...

After all, the cool thing to do is brag about how much you did not spend on your components. ;)

I think it's safe to say that there are atleast a handful of guys in Utah (not neccessarily posters on RME) that are running custom Dynatrac, Teraflex, Spidertrax, or other custom axles. On top of that, these same guys could have custom shafts and joints (300M, Bobby Long D60 birf sets, or 40 spline units).

While these axles are not the norm here on RME (especially within the frequent "posters"), they're out there. Now will they admit to what they've spent? Maybe, but probably not.

Will they show up in your poll? Maybe, but probably not.

Yep, I agree! I know a lady who wrote a $55,000 dollar check for a buggy not to long ago. You do too Von.;) People on here trashed the builder when he asked what it was worth. Lets face it, the vast majority of people on here could never do that. They are cheap asses. No offense intended. They have to be, just like me they are working stiffs in a high dollar hobby.
By the way, here is what I have into my axles $600 for the front 60, $400 for the detroit (4 wheel parts matching prices:D) $275 rear detroit (used) $180 for drive slugs from Mike @ Summit, $175 for 35 splines from six states, front and rear diff covers from great lakes (can't remember $200 lets say) high steer arms (free, made em myself) $1830. ish for both
But this doesn't include the cheap ass me stuff. Lets see, trips to Vernal to find K30 @ $2000. Hours spent ripping out 60 to replace with 44 to sell now raped and pilledged K30 for $1400. Hours spent making high steer arms out of 3/4" steel with a torch grinder and a drill press. On and On and On
I guess my point is that there are a lot of differant levels (money wise) of people out there. If someone can spend $80,000 for a turn key buggy, I say more power to em. They drive the market that makes the cool new bling stuff. MMMMM dana Eightyssss!! I will need pics when its done Von:D

$6k for completely built/rebuilt 60's is pretty cheap. Since I'm a dealer for everything listed, that is not retail. If I had to do it again, I'd do it again. Going out on trail rides and not breaking anything is priceless!!

To date the only things I've busted on the trail since the build are sheering the high steer studs. I believe I messed that one up by not keeping them tight. Had to be. I wasn't bound up and I don't have hydro assist.

I believe Von is right. There are some guys out there with a lot of cash in their trail rigs. I hung out with two guys from CO over EJS this year. Both of them had Solid Axles in their rigs. Without asking them what they paid, I bet it's in the $12k range....

Absolutely nothing in the axles, about $200 in what has been called consumables. The money will come when I put a selectable locker in the front. I'm guessing somewhere around $500 for that.

I'm the poor fool out in Tooele running a set of Dynatrac Pro Rock Dana 60's under my FJ62, or I guess more accurately there is a set of these axles residing patiently under the lifeless carcass of my now motor-less FJ62. I got them like 5 years ago, back in another time when money was easier to come by. The prices listed are their current prices off their site... can't (or don't want to) remember exactly what I paid for mine, but it was pretty darned close.

Front axle: new price from Dynatrac $7,126 without shipping:

-Dynatrac Pro Rock 60 Hi-pinion housing with high-clearance center section.
-Dynatrac Pro 60 Hi-pinion oil flow system (max warranted pinion angle - 18 degrees)
-Warn heavy-duty, manual-locking hubs
-SD 35-spline, 1.5”, induction-hardened, alloy steel, inner axle shafts (uses 1480 axle joint)
-Upgraded disc brake assembly with a 6 on 5.5 bolt circle
-4.56 ratio ring and pinion
-ARB Air actuated locking differential
-D60 heavy-duty steel differential cover
-1350 U-bolt style yoke
-Dynatrac Pro 60 knuckle, Pro 60 wheel hub, & Spindle package
-High-clearance u-bolt and spring plate kit
-High-clearance cross over steering
-35-spline Premium hub & outer shafts
-Braided stainless steel brake lines

Rear axle: new price from Dynatrac $5,134 without shipping

-Dynatrac Pro Rock 60 Hi-pinion housing with high-clearance center section
-Dynatrac Pro 60 Hi-pinion oil flow system (max warranted pinion angle - 18 degrees)
-35-spline, 1-ton, induction-hardened, alloy steel axle shafts
-Upgraded disc brake assembly with a 6 on 5.5 bolt circle
-Braided stainless steel brake lines
-4.56 ratio ring and pinion
-ARB Air actuated locking differential
-D60 heavy-duty steel differential cover
-1350 yoke
-High-clearance u-bolt kit
-Billet housing ends, large tapered roller axle bearings, and a four bolt steel retainer

So together with shipping, the total cost of the pair was pretty close to $13,000.

They are pretty cool axles, though I have no doubt that something quite similar could be built for lots less. Too bad I don't have the time to play with them now a days.

Ya, its my feeble half-hearted attempt to try to get rid of the old bastard. I'll probably end up yanking the axles out and selling them alone eventually, but figured I'd toss it on KSL and see if I got any bites... That or stick 'em under my FJ40 for a while.

Huh. Maybe I need the body. :D no. Say no to that.

That could be arranged! And while you are over there picking it up, might I interest you in a couple truckloads of assorted Cruiser parts to go along with it? I dare say you could easily double or maybe even triple the size of your current parts pile!

Most of the really high dollar guys I have spoken with dont spend much time on RME. They aren't looking to get advice on builds, parts, troubleshooting, etc. They just have someone do it for them. So this poll is going to be way off if you are polling what is in and around our area.
I dont really want to say what I have though I'll hint at that in a minute. I am way,way past the 5000 mark.
Von is right it is common for guys to spend up to 15k on axles. It dosen't neccessarily mean that it's worth it. Some guys do waste their money some don't, It just depends on what you're goin for. For example.
Dynatrac rear 60 for $5100 350-400 pounds. Or a rear True Hi9 Spidertrax with same goodies. $3900 200 pounds.
Dynatrac front 60 $7100 550-620 pounds. Or a front True Hi9 Spidertrax 609 with same goodies, better brakes, and better knuckles. $7600 360-380 pounds.
Dynatrac 12200 w/out shipping. Truspi 609's 11500. Neither of these have specials u joints or chromo's. No trusses or install.
Depending on what you're going for I can see why a 4000 pair of built up junkyard 1 tons is a steal compared to dynatracs. Especially if you dont care about weight. But if you care about 450 lbs and 50 degree steering you have to pay for it, there's no way around it.
Also if you want to run 44+ inch tires and a high hp motor reliably you cant do that without building some serious big high dollar axles like 80s.
