How much money do you have in your rig so far?

I really can't see how married people build rigs without full support of their spouse. I know all of our discretionary income in the last year and a half has gone into our jeep build :-\ that works for us because kami loves wheeling probably more than I do :D

Expensive hobbies = angry wives....

That's what I am up against
Expensive Hobbies = You needing you're wives support, otherwise it causes stress on the relationship.

If she married you knowing you spend your money on the hobby then she should know full well that you intend to still.

Just never throw the "I make the money" bit at her, I have seen lots of marriages end because of that little sentence.

My wife isn't really excited about it so I pay cash for things and don't keep reciepts. I also don't have many or any high dollar parts. I have some great friends who have really helped me out. I find that if I spend money on her too it goes much better but is much more expensive. lol

If you want a rig to perform well and not have issues you better spend the money on good parts. Knowbody likes the guy that is always holding everyone up. If you want a nice dependible rig, don't skimp. So it's not a cheap hobby in any way. I don't want to know what I had into my last rig. I have a pretty good idea of what the new buggy will cost and I know I'll have to expect on spending way more then I think ;) about the wife thing, she loves it. That's the reason we are building the buggy. The jeep just wasn't fast enough haha :)

I have a bit of a running tally going on, and lets just say its not pretty.

Ive been dating the same girl for almost four years now, and every once in a while i get to hear about how stupid it is of me to drop this much into a vehicle.

So I went out and picked her up a full size 78' Cherokee Chief.

now I've gone from 100% of my spare dime going into my rig, to only 40%... with the other 60% going towards hers.

at least she can't yell at me anymore hahaha

Her is a spin on the rig vs wife thing. I took my wife out wheelin a few times, now she does not want to be the passenger at all! The solution will be building a second rig! The first one is far from done!

Soooo maybe I missed it but what are you looking to do with the rig? You can make this as expensive as you want it really. I've got 4500 into my truck and it does pretty much everything my dad's 45000 dollar jeep does. Its not as pretty and rides no where near as smooth but still kicks some a$$:D

I totaled up the cost of upgrades and it was more than the Jeep was worth when I started, the Jeep is now worth less than an un-modified rig with similar mileage (43K) would be. I turned $10.5k trade in down from a lot when we got Jay's JK in '07, the last total on upgrades was over $15k counting the mid-stages that didn't last long.

I keep the wife happy with two methods,

The main one is the one for one deal, for every dollar that I spend on jeep upgrades she gets something of equal value. It costs more but keeps her happy, she's into horses so it does kind of even out and we would have spent the $$ on the boys anyway.

Number two is birthday and Christmas, I time my needs to fall in with the holidays and get to unwrap things she can't lift. I do the ordering so I'm sure to get the right things. She gets gifts of equal or greater value.

Jeeping doesn't HAVE to be that expensive, I have a friend in Farmington that has right around $3k into his YJ, salvaged tub/drivetrain, junkyard axles, lots of fab' time and used 37" Krawlers. He has just as much fun as anyone and goes just about anywhere he wants.

Good ideas, I also do the Birthday and Christmas thing too. It works well. If I don't I get lame stuff I don't really want anyway.

Its her jeep!!!!

I wanted a early bronco before we bought the cj-7. She wanted a jeep so I bought her one(she said it was here turn for a toy). So now when the jeep needs something I can use "its your jeep not mine" works pretty good. The liscense plate reads "SWEET P". I say it is my jeep and her plate. Just not around her.
