How much should I pay

I need to get gears and lockers in my tj, it has the dana 35rear and the 30 in the front. Budget is a major issue so I will probably be using lockrights. I am trying to figure out about how much money I will need to spend to do this. any ideas or recomendation for good shops would be apreciated.

First, don't spend the money on the D35

Find a Chysler 8.25 and swap that in, unless you can find a D44 from an early XJ

perhaps you didn't note that he is on a budget and he asked about gears/lockers for his TJ. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think there is a Chrysler 8.25 that is a direct bolt in for a TJ (which is the vehicle he specified), nor is the XJ D44.

Without direct knowledge of how hardcore he is going to be wheeling, and how big his tires are, making a rear axle swap may not be the best thing for him. If he is going to be running 33 or bigger meats, yes, upgrade to a stronger rear axle. However, if he is using a 2" lift with 31" tires, and plans on running trails with a rating of 3 or less, that D35 may last him a long time

So, my questions for Sams92XJ:
1. confirm TJ or XJ?
2. What size tires?
3. What kind of wheeling? Chicken corners or Pritchett/Hole in the rock?
4. Is your vehicle going to be a daily driver?

Sometimes it is better to wheel at the capability of your rig until you save enough money to do the modifications the right way.

tj

It is for my tj, it is a 4cylinder, I would like to run 35 inch tires but I may get 33's. I would like to swap the axle but that seems pretty expensive. As for the type of wheeling that I do, nothing to hardcore, I do trails like cliffhanger, hells revenge, steel bender, nothing too extreme for now. It will be a daily driver for a while, but I don't drive much

Give Brandon at Anarchy Offroad a call he does good work. He did my Gears and Lockers in my TJ I haven't had any problems with it. His number is 541-1402

I second the nomination for the axle swap. I know you want to keep it budget but trust me... the D 35 is junk. Don't WASTE your money on a locker for that axle. I don't wheel hardcore but I still managed to break my spiders and shear the pins out of the lockrite that I replaced the spiders with. The D 35 is not worth the work.

If you are bent on having a locker installed then pick your fav shop or take a recommendation and give em a call. I would try looking in the vendors section. ;) PM one of the guys on there and let them know what you are looking for.

Last month in Moab a guy I was with grenaded a shaft on his locked Dana 35 with 33" tires and a 4 banger. I wouldn't waste any money on that axle.

That same thing happened to me but last week. One of the guys in my group rented a Farabees and the locked D35 busted an axle shaft.

You can do a swap for probably cheaper than what you are thinking. I swapped in an 8.8 for around $500.00. Bought it complete from a junkyard and then welded on brackets. Works great and I never worry about it breaking.

ya dont waist the money on the 35, you put more money into trying to reapair the damages then to do it right the first time.

35 axle

I am convinced, I will do something besides build the 35. I had one on my last tj, it had 33's and wasn't locked and I never had a problem, then again I did not wheel it a ton. I will keep my eyes open for an axle to swap in, its probably better to do it right the first time.

Here is the hardest thing

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE

I know how hard it is to budget something like that in, however, if you remember that you want this axle, then you can do it. I spent 1800 doing my axles, and I love them with only one exception. I should have done an ARB front and rear, where as I have a Detroit Front and ARB rear. Save the money, get a TJ 44, plus an ARB. Really, I know you think you want the lockright, but get a selectable locker that will hold up to some abuse. Those tires will give you a hard time even with the 4banger. Saw a guy do a really really nice wheel stand in a 4banger, so I now know you really can do somethings in those.

Best of luck! Took me all summer to save up for my axles, and wheeling with a fully open CJ is not that fun as compared to now! It was worth it! :D

Cheers
