My guess would be that they were trying to pull up on the passenger side of the jeep to get it out of a suction, since as you can see it is deeper than the driver side is. Still a Darwin award waiting to happen!

Did you see them walking around on top of the mud like it's pavement? That's some solid stuff. The only way to get that Jeep out without tearing it apart is to dig it out.
