If you had a bill of sale could you have fought the fee? I guess somethings to remember when selling something.

I just get on the Utah DMV website and mark my vehicle as sold

I don't think they could have made it stick anyway. Maybe if it was a vehicle, but that was a trailer. They can't prove he was driving OR the owner of the towing vehicle.
