I need a project

So being retired has lots of advantages but I am getting bored. I put 3000 miles on the Harley last month but have gone on all the rides close by five or six times each. I have a little TW200 that I ride around in the desert and explore but I've explored a lot of the places around here. I can also only ride the TW200 for so long before my bottom says stop :D. So I decided I need a project to work on. I'm thinking maybe build and old Jeep (I'd take Toad's Comanche if he'd deliver :D). Maybe a hot rod? Maybe a rat rod out of a jeep? So I need some ideas from you guys. Remember I'm in Cali so it is not easy to pick something up from Utah and get it to me. If you had $5000 what would you use it to play with. I may get a little more than that but I've talked my wife into that much.

So what do you think?

PS I'm coming up there in spring break so if there is something with a tow bar on it I could pick it up then.

My dad has two cj8 scramblers I think he would part with. Both are rollers . One or both. If you two could work something out I could possibly deliver it to you if that helps. I dont have any pics handy can get some saturday. one is quite nice does not even need paint. Just an idea.

I think a rat rod willys would be awesome. Hopefully someday I'll be able to do something like that.

I always thought that would be cool. Get a CJ-5 or something similar, stretch the frame, mount the grill way forward and then put a big old V8 between the two. You could go without the top on it and chop the windshield down a couple of inches. I've almost talked myself into it :D

Okay people, instead of who has what for sale (not that it doesn't give me ideas) lets get this back to "What type of project or hobby would you do or at least start on if you had $5000 to spend on it?"

You said rat-rod - make it out of an XJ. Chop the top, cut the coils, widen the rear axle, that could be a lot of fun.

Been toying with the idea of putting my spare rusted out not restorable WW2 tub on my YJ. Since it's a 4 banger was wondering if it would fit. maybe hack off the front of it for a 0 approach angle, stretch the tub and make a retro GPW crawler. Offroading with a retro jeep would be better than a ratrod jeep yes? haha

I like it. You're right, it would be more fun to end up with something retro, cool, original, and can at least do dirt roads. I don't like the look of the YJ but is it a good platform? Never thought about that...hmm

I would love to build a hot rod. A rat rod would work but, I really like the high gloss look of a beautiful paint job. If I had the time you have I would build an old Willys coupe. I know lots of folks have built them and you can see pictures of them everywhere but, there is just something about the lines on the roof flowing into the rear glass and into the trunk lid. SEXY!!! I don't know if that is in your budget or not just my idea of the perfect hot rod.

4x4's I have always like the look of the Willys wagons, pickup trucks and really love the look of the old (30's to 40's) International trucks. Maybe a turbo Diesel engine of some sort and a slight drop on the suspension if 2wd.

Muscle cars my all time favorite is the Plymouth Road Runner. 1970 was a home run in my book. The whole idea of the Road Runner was to make a car cheap so that everyone could afford one, do some pure street pounding power and drive train and race. They even had radio deletes that kept the weight of the radio and speakers out of the car. Pure muscle, no fat. A 1966 or 1967 Chevelle is high on my list as well as the 1965 and 1966 Pontiac GTO. The beginning of the muscle car started with the GTO.

Lets see. Muscle i would do a 442 clone, just flat nasty but clean looking with a modern twist (LS based)you can pick up a running olds cut for under 5 and have a running project.

4x4 street... no question, 72 blazer, there again LS based, lifted made to look nice with a ROCKING stereo.

4x4 toy... 79-83 toyota 4x4, 4.3 chevy, th350, toyota doubler, toyota axles (built up of course), cut the body off as it gets beat, till you have a rockin Toyota based buggy.

Just my idea of what to build if i had 5k to start with. Not all these cost 5k to buy but you could buy your starting parts
