Are building up a samurai?

I dunno... If I could find a clean, cheap builder that had already been partially parted out, I'd consider storing it until I was ready to start building. In the meantime, read the above post I just made about the engine. :D I suppose I'm gathering parts... I need to start/finish my other project, the FJ80 engine swap.

It will be interesting to see how hard it is to get parts for, but from what I've read, most Toyota dealers can get stuff if you have the part numbers. Of course, expect to pay for them. :-\

You gonna talk to Cdan at American Toyota? If anyone can get you the part numbers and the parts, he can.

This is a pretty exciting project!

All that being said, I made plans to pick up a engine that could work for this potential project. On Friday I will be picking up a '86 Toyota 2.4l 2L diesel engine, non-turbo. It's currently dismantled, but from the sound of it, it'll be fairly easy to get running. It will be interesting to see how hard it is to get parts for, but from what I've read, most Toyota dealers can get stuff if you have the part numbers. Of course, expect to pay for them. :-\

I figure with adding a turbo and some fueling, it should be capable of 180 ft/lbs and probably around 30 MPG. There's not a lot of info out there about turning these motors up, but it's a diesel... add fuel, add air. :greg:

The cool thing about these Toyota 2L diesels is that they are mechanically injected and that motor mounts, clutch and even the bellhousing share parts with the 22RE, so putting together the rest of the drivetrain will require no adapters. It would be simple to find a Toyota 5 speed and clutch to bolt up!

So yeah... mabey this will go somewhere.

2L's are cool I would really like to find one and have it rebuilt. And yes parts aren't difficult to find with the right connections. Our oversea friends have different thoughts on them though :-\ they don't seem to be very popular at all. Its all hear say though...

My old neighbor had a 2LT in an 86 IFS truck I have no idea of how he got it here (in the states) but it was a true 86 diesel. He is actually the guy that I bought the I-mark from and he also had a factory diesel XJ Cherokee and two Diesel Pup's :greg: I tried to make conversation a few times but his english was really bad.

You will need a different bellhousing to run a 2L, 2LT or 3LT as the starter is on the opposite side. Marlin has a pile of them (that will work with a G or W series) last I asked although that was 5 or 6 years ago.

If you make it work that would be really cool. With my Samurai I wanted a 106 wheel base (like a shortbed Toyota), Toyota axles, Toyota transfercases etc... In the long run I was much better off just buying a Toyota :D

I was thinking he would be a great person to talk to when it comes time to get parts. Seems like there are a few places to find parts for them, it's just the cost!

Yeah, they seem to be pretty unrecognized little motors. There's not a ton of info out there about them, but I guess when most vehicles come with turbo diesels, a weak 4 cyl diesel isn't anything to get excited about.

Good info, your diesel knowledge blows me away! I read that a 2L will bolt in place of a 22RE, bellhousing and all. Here's what I was reading, but it looks like it doesn't say anything about the bellhousing. -

I wonder how hard a bellhousing will be to find if Marlin is out and this 2L does not have a bellhousing.

Re: Non-US Toyota parts.

If/when the part you are looking for was offered here in the US, it should be available through any dealership. However if your trying to get the parts for a non-US application, not going to happen easily. CDan can't pull any magic strings, he just knows how to reliably tell you what is available when lazy parts guys will give you the quick "no". Along with that, sometimes the parts guys can't even look up the part you need, but if they were provided a part number they can still actually order it. I found this out with my Toyota diesel bell housing (1HZ to H55F), I gave them the number, there was one in stock in the Cali distribution center, done. However with some of the other parts they can't even pull them up in their computer, but call a Canadian Toyota dealer and they can (but want a fortune), so we ended up getting them form a Japan based source. It can be a long drawn out process but with the 2L I would imagine its been a little more hammered out over the years. Olly and I actually got to check out a 50 mile 'test motor' that was at a Cali based Cruiser shop (SOR) 5-6 years ago, I'm not 100% sure what it was. I4, turbo-diesel and supposedly bolted up to the US spec transmissions. They had got it with a handful of Land Cruiser diesel power plants. Would be a neat build setup.

You would need to find a bell housing from an 84-85 diesel truck. That housing will work with either G or W series transmissions.

Depending on the route you take you could also track down a Toyota 2wd diesel transmission and run the divorced Samurai t-case--just something to think about. The 2wd diesels were still rare, but defiantly more common than the 4x4's. The 2wd 2L's were offered in the first gen (well... 83 and older trucks) 2wd's as well but I'm assuming that they had the non removable bell housing like the 4x4's did those years.

 Good to know!

I'm having 2nd thoughts about using the 2L... I'm still going to pick it up, but I don't know that it's worth building. Seems that even with a turbo, intercooler and a good bit of boost, they're still not a powerhouse. Not that I'm expecting burnouts and 120 MPH, but for the effort, it might be wiser to use a more available engine that is better know. I may hang onto it for awhile and see what happens.

I've found some great info here- http://toyotadiesel.com

I really think a VW TDI engine would rock in this application... I know when I had my Jetta chipped, it put out some amazing power!

A build like this would be so cool in so many ways. First, light weight. You may could even get away with a winch made for ATV's or something like that. Second, a few big men could possibly pick up your ride out of any jam that you may find yourself in. Third drivetrain could be smaller (i.e. less expensive) and easier to come by. Forth, you could tow this little rig behind a mid sized sedan (I wouldn't but the possibility is there). And how about just thinking outside the box. Very few would have anything like this. You would be distinct. No one woud get you confused with another on the trail. And Diesel! What more could you think of. Diesel fuel is starting to become the fuel of the future. Heck, you can make your own fuel in your garage if needed. Fuel mileage would be unheard of for a little wheeler.

This is something I would consider building if I had the funds to build one.

Makes sense Kurt, thanks for weighing in. I understood that a bunch of these 2L diesel Toyotas were sold in the US, so sourcing parts shouldn't be all that difficult. I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time. ;)

Yep! Light-weight would be very nice, but I'd think it would still end up over 3000 #'s. Even then, a 6000 # winch would be overkill.

I love diesels, finding a small, simple one that I could tinker with is really what I'd like to have.

I think I could pull this off somewhat cheap... that's the only way I could do it anyway. Finding a Toyota truck without a engine would be a good start, then a Samurai that has been stripped down. Some good planning and lots of fab work, there we go!

I think you would be good to go for 2LT parts. I just looked up a few common parts and Toyota still lists them here in the states, likely in stock in the Cali warehouse. Engine Overhaul Gasket Kits, Water Pump, Starter, Oil Pans, etc... all available as good numbers

I did a quick ebay search and seems like most major rebuild parts are available on there as well. I took that as a good sign. Even so, a master overhaul kit is $$$$. Not a surprise, but there was a good case of sticker shock.

$20 says Greg sells it within 6 months of completion for another project. :D

Cool project, gonna watch this thread. I've always wanted to build a mini 4x4 rig.

Why not a Volkswagen 1.x diesel engine?

That would be my first preference and if I used one it would be the 1.9 TDI. Like I said earlier in this thread my DD is a Jetta with a TDI and I love them! The biggest issues with them is they are expensive to obtain, then there's a LOT of wiring or the big expense of buying a mechanical IP, then the adapter on top of all that.

It will be a long time before I do anything... I have a FJ80 that's waiting for a 5.3 transplant. :greg:
