So on Sunday myself and a few friends headed out to Starvation at about 5 in the morning. The snow had already started to pile up on the roads so it was in interesting drive to say the least.
We got out there and found a spot with lots of perch probably caught 200 tiny ones between the four of us that all got thrown back. Here is a picture of where we first set up the shanty.
After a couple hours of not catching anything worth keeping we decided to test our fate and see how close we could get to the open water.
We ended up getting within about ten feet of the edge fishing through a solid 12 inches of ice.
The wind started to kick up a bit so we moved the shanty over to the edge which made things a lot nicer.
We ended up with eight trout between 14 and 21 inches. This is one of the bigger ones.
After about 4 hours of fighting the wind and freezing our tails off we felt a very large jolt in the ice. I'm sure the ice moved up quite a few inches. When we looked out the window a huge chunk of ice had broken off right where we had been fishing earlier. We guess about five feet came off making us a little nervous about sticking around any longer for fear of floating away on an ice berg.
Here is our perch take for the day. We ended up with quite a few that should have gotten thrown back but they all got eaten last night.
And here are all but two of the trout cut into steaks and fillets.
I have to say that this was my best day on the ice since I first got introduced to ice fishing just a few years ago and I will never wait this long to hit up Starvation again.
