I am sold on the idea of a 12v refrigerator, and I'd love to have one for my upcoming Rubicon trip. I would mount it in the cargo area of my TJ, and therein lies a problem. I permanently removed my back seat and installed a Tuffy security enclosure in its place:
The steel lid sits 15" above the floor of the tub, so my fridge would have to be shorter than that or its a no-go. I've been casually looking around online for months, and one of the only fridges I have found that could fit is the Engel MT17:
Its external dimensions are 21.2" x 12" x 14.2" so it fits. The internal measurements are 11.5" x 8" x 10" and that sounds small, but it compares well to my current Yeti Roadie 20 ice chest (13.8" x 9.2" x 10.3") which needs to haul lots of ice in addition to any food or beverages. One more factor: I'll never have any family members along for the ride--the fridge only needs to be large enough for me. Sadly, the MT17 typically sells for $800... and I cringe every time I think how this works out on a dollar-per-cubic-inch ratio.
I would not be opposed to going with something a little longer and/or wider, but my height limit is fixed. Does anyone know of any other models that might work for me? Or do you have any other brilliant ideas? If so, I'm eager to hear them.
