If you could go anywhere...

So we're planning a trip for a couple years out. We can get a condo (timeshare) pretty much anywhere in the world. If you could go anywhere, where would you go? A couple criterias to keep in mind: 1) It must be warm. The wife won't go for anywhere that's not warm. 2) Beaches are a plus, but not absolutely required. 3) Safety is a necessity. Don't want to go hang out in Afghanistan if you know what I mean :D

I have been thinking Costa Rica or Belize. Both are places I've wanted to go. The wife has suggested Fiji. We'll be heading to Africa around the first part of the year, so we'll have done that already. Suggest some others.

Belize looks like a really cool place to go, but New Zealand is supposed to be awesome. Very safe and English speaking too.

Northshore area on Oahu. I've heard lots of good things about Belize.
We've done Hawaii several times so we're wanting to do something else this time. We've also done Mexico a couple years ago and Grand Cayman this past year.

I had thought about New Zealand but forgot about that one, I'll add it back to the list :D

I vote Belize.. if you have say 2 weeks spend the first week in a Town called San Ignacio the best place to stay would be Cahl Petch Village (literally a 10 minute walk from the Cahal Petch ruins). Great little town, lots to see and do in the area for very cheap. while there take a trip to Actuichil muknal (SP) great cave, then take a overnighter into Honduras to see Takal and stay on the lake near there (old spanish fort). then for your second week get a beach house on Kay Calker (one of the smaller islands but a close ferry ride to Belize city and any of the other islands with more touristy stuff). there you have your beaches, scuba diving on the reef etc..

now if you are into archeology check out http://bvar.org/ maybe go down and spend a couple weeks digging and the weekends seeing things with the best tour guides you can get for free :)..

if you want more info on Belize let me know.. I stayed there for a month a few years back and it is great!!!..

Belize city is the only place I've ever been where I felt unsafe. I've heard the islands and outlying areas aren't as bad though.

I think Argentina would be killer (and it's cheap) or ecuador. I'm trying to put together a trip in spring of 2011 to climb Killamenjaro in memorium of my 20's.

ya Belize City is not a safe place.. land and get out of there :).. although Manilla felt less safe to me when I was there than Belize City but I wouldn't choose to hang out in either place :)

A few years back I did a trip to New Zealand, Australia and Fiji. We did the trip in November/December time so it was warm and nice there. It was a very memorable trip, each place for its own reasons. We saw lots of beaches, lots of driving (because we wanted to), lots of scuba diving, and had a great time. I would recomend any of those places. I would also concider a european trip but just because there is so much to see there and I have never been.

yeah kauai FTW big-time, i have been to oahu twice and i do love the north shore and laie but we flew to kauai for a few days on our last trip and it was amazing!

we saw the conchords live in vegas this year and it was the best concert/comedian show i have ever seen by a long shot. arj barker (dave on the show) opened for them and he is hilarious, i highly recommend his youtube vids. and the conchords are just amazing, the songs and commentary are so funny, me and a couple of friends can sing every word of their songs (and often do)

but as far as where to go, i am all about places that i can just chill. i am into vacations, not travel. that is why i will never go to europe and my wife hates that. luckily she went for three effin weeks with her dad before we were married.

Belize has some great diving but tourists are still a target. I really enjoy a little south of Cancun (Playa del Carmen) or Cozumel. Costa Rica is beautiful as well.

We stayed a week on Harbour Island in the Bahamas and enjoyed that as well.

Greece (check out the vineyards), Spain, Cruise the Baltic Sea (Estonia, Denmark, Russia, Sweden, Finland.), Talk to Kurt about an Aussie down under trip (he just did one).

Our family of 11 did the Baltic Sea cruise last year. 21 days of fun. We did in Pairs and London as well.

If you want to go somewhere close/cheap we did Jamaica last year and had a awesome time (good diving there also) I own a saltwater aquarium business and have connections all over the pacific rim. If you dive, go to Palau/truk lagoon/rock islands or Fiji/Tonga. If you decide to go somewhere in the pacific island chains let me know, I know people that have private homes on many of the islands there and can get you some rental info.

I go to Costa Rica every year. The City is cool and mild for safe factor. Very safe in the day time. Beaches are why I go, Surfing is amazing(see endless summer), water is almost too warm in the middle of the day. I fell in love with snorkeling at our beach, Eel, blowfish and huge schools were common everywhere. Volcan Arenal is the most awe-inspiring geology event in my life. It's very active and you can hike very close as it throws boulders at you.

Costa Rica is a tourist thriving country, to maintain that status it is very safe. You are treated very well. There are other countries that are listed that offer other activities that Costa Rica may not excel in, scuba for example, Belize is known for that in Central America. Beaches and Jungle and Volcanoes(13) are what I think are strong points. 90%+ literacy rate and most are proficient in english.

Fly into Liberia(LIR) and you will be 40 minutes from the beach and an hour from Arenal. If you fly into San Jose you will have to travel 4 hours to the coast either side. Flying from vegas is usually $100 less.

I like Playa Conchal on the Guanacaste province, It consists entirely of sea shells in stead of sand. The surf has a unique sound when it breaks.

Water is clean and potable. You could eat Subway, Quiznos, BK, McD's and Papa Johns all the same as here if you were homesick.

LMK if there is anything else that you would like to know. If you go cool but if not, go sometime. I will spend my life exploring beaches that are there. There is so much to see.

Right now it's a toss up between New Zealand and Costa Rica. Costa Rica may be a tad ahead because the tickets there should be a bit cheaper, the Condo for the time we are there will be the same cost regardless of where we go. We aren't scuba certified so right now that's not playing a part of the decision, however, the wife and I both love to snorkel so that's good to hear about Costa Rica. I may get scuba certified between now and then but I don't know.

We should have a final decision tomorrow after we discuss it with my brother and his wife and get their feedback. Thanks everyone for the great suggestions, I'd have to say that my list of places to go visit has grown a bit
