Jeep If you own a TJ read this!!!

If you own a TJ Chrysler installed a trail killing time bomb for you. Apparently transponder keys were an option from 98 on. If your jeep doesn't have a transponder key it still has the SKIM key reader module installed on the ignition side of the column, it just isn't plugged in. If you find a wire hanging and figure it fell out, plugging it in will kill your jeep.
Once plugged, if you start the jeep the ECM will see the SKIM module and look for the transponder key. If it doesn't see one it will shut the jeep off in about 3 seconds. The best part is the only way to fix it is to tow it to the dealership and have them program a key. They won't/can't turn it off.

I hope this saves someone from an impossible trail fix. Thank you Chrysler!!!
Ill try and get a picture of the module and wire NOT to plug in.

Another little piece of info, If your key is black it is not using the transponder system, if your key is grey the system is already setup.

Great info and x2 what Steve said. Stinks that we had to learn this the hard way.

Glad you guys made it home. You are guys are A+ in my books!

That must have changed at some point because mine is black and has the RFID. It also has the remote as part of it as well.

the sad part is that if it weren't for this stupid issue, the jeep would have completed the trail with zero issues. I'm curious what prices they're quoting you to program the key.

If I owned a TJ that didn't have it enabled I would be ripping out the module. I can't believe they include it on the non-transponder Jeeps. It would have been great to have everyone there.

Even though we didn't finish, it was a pretty good trip. It was really great to meet all of you and I look forward to the next trip. The best part was right before he shut the jeep off for the last time my dad told my son riding with him that he was having a blast. I think this trip planted the seed to get him to Moab. That is worth all the trouble.

I don't know what jeep wants to repair it. He is having a friend replace the ignition and attempting to fix the SKIM issue. If he can't fix it I think we will send the ECM to be reprogrammed by and aftermarket company to disable the SKIM instead of getting keys programmed by the dealer. Did I mention I hate jeeps.
