Even though we didn't finish, it was a pretty good trip. It was really great to meet all of you and I look forward to the next trip. The best part was right before he shut the jeep off for the last time my dad told my son riding with him that he was having a blast. I think this trip planted the seed to get him to Moab. That is worth all the trouble.

I don't know what jeep wants to repair it. He is having a friend replace the ignition and attempting to fix the SKIM issue. If he can't fix it I think we will send the ECM to be reprogrammed by and aftermarket company to disable the SKIM instead of getting keys programmed by the dealer. Did I mention I hate jeeps.

It was great getting to know you guys - I'd wheel with you any day. It good to hear that your dad was having a blast on that trail. Let's get him out some more in the near future. As promised, I did not take any pictures or video of my Toyota pulling the LJ from Grey Mesa to the Cowboy Camp...so technically it never happened ;)

You guys maintained the best attitude imaginable. I would consider myself fortunate to have you accompany me on any future adventure.
In spite of the events, I learned a ton about what it takes to tow a vehicle out of a trail.
I just wish you could have done the rest with us. Let me know if you ever need company on a trail...

Stolen from Google. This is the unit.

This is where it hides waiting to bite you. Notice the loan black cable running to the bottom of the module.

After seeing and hearing of the trouble this caused for you I would be tempted to snip it off with a pair of dikes. :ugh: Mine has the sentry key and wished I didn't.

AMEN on cutting the plug off, or at least putting a nice fat piece of duct tape over it! Im actually the guy that plugged it in. What happened was a no start situation that we traced to the ignition switch itself. Before tearing into the steering column, i checked for loose wires within view that appeared to go toward the key. I found one!! Big mistake. We ended up hot-wiring the Jeep and fixing the original problem, but it was too late. The ecm was convinced we were thieves. Yes, i screwed up, but for Jeep to sell this bobbie trap ready to spring is unforgivable. I have had trips interrupted by carnage of all sorts (broken axles, pitman arm, steering gear, ring gear, bent drag links etc) but I must say this was the most frustrating yet. Glockman- again my apologies. Hope to wheel with you again soon!

Don't worry about it. Anyone would have done the same thing. You did cost me $150 though. After watching you run that Power probe and how awesome it was for troubleshooting electrical problems, I HAVE TO HAVE ONE:)

Really late update.

My dad's mechanic had to replace the electrical ignition switch which is what started this hole issue. He then had a tech from the Jeep dealership come out and they read a code from the ECU. They then programmed a key for the ECU/transponder halo that allows the jeep to start and run for more than 3 seconds.

Here is the funny or ridiculous part depending on your perspective.
He only had 1 key cut and programmed. My dad wanted at least one spare so he called the dealership that cut and programmed the key. He told the service manager the back story and that one of their techs made him a key and asked what he needed to do in order to get another one cut/programmed. The service manager asked for the VIN, then told him the Jeep doesn't have a transponder key. My dad again told him it indeed does and THEIR tech had cut and programmed one the week prior. The service manager insisted that the Jeep didn't have a transponder and told him to just have a locksmith cut him a key.

Moral of the story,
Buy a Toyota!
