Inside TJ tub lining questions, hurc, durabak etc

The time has come for me to rip up the carpet, after being tired of floods and standing water inside the jeep. I have a couple of questions for you guys before i dive in and start buying all the stuff. First question i have is what would you guys suggest over durabak and hurculiner? which do you like better?

My brother hurc'd his, but rolled it on, and it was very sharp and jagged inside, not making it very comfortable for bare skin to rub against, was that because he rolled it on or was it because its how hurc is?

Second question is if i was to spray it on, could i just buy an undercoating gun and hook it to my air compressor?

Third question is where would be a good place to purchase the stuff cost wise?

Fourth question is do you have any tips or suggestions for applying or anything?

Always appreciate the input,

Patrick

I have Durabak, but haven't taken my interior apart yet to roll it in. I'm not much help, but just posting to keep track of responses. :D

The Durabak installs I've seen are quite similar to the Herculiner it sounds like to me. The coating dries fairly hard and wouldn't be super friendly to skin. The Durabak seems to hold up respectably, though.

ditto on the durabak, it's not quite as durable as a rhino (from experience) and you can spray durabak on with an undercoat gun (you can buy the gun from them with the proper nozzle size). It reduces with xylene. depending on how many coats and what your flash time is you can get it to lay down, also it's a little rubbery so its a little softer then herculiner.

Herculiner can be left.. less-stirred, to keep the gritty rubbery chunks in the bottom more, if you're looking for a less-abrasive coating. I did a couple work vans with it. I will say that Herculiner is some NASTY stuff, I had all the doors on the van open and the side door too, and it was REALLY SMELLY!

I did hurc in my van and in my bronco and love it.
and like tacoma said its nasty. I used an air mover that I use for floods and it worked great to keep the odor down but I am sure any fan would help though.

I paid like 80.00 at walmart for the 1G kit

I noticed your in layton You are welcome to come check out my van and see how well it holds up. I use my van almost every day for work and it holds up great!

I used the herculiner too and it is super rough but it has lasted pretty well. I have heard of people doing both, starting with the herculiner and then going over it again with a smoother durabak or similiar. Would I do it again? Yes Worth the 80$? Yes Would i want to sleep on it or scuff my knees on it? No IMHO

You cant tell me this isnt sexy looking:D

I did Herculiner in mine and I love it. It has been a few years and it is till holding up great. Like Tacoma said make sure you really prep it. I don't remember the price but I know it was no more than a hundred dollars. I was applying mine and stopped for a second to talk to my dad and regardless of the mask I was wearing I was whacked. Light headed and little spinny. If it was a friday night it could have saved me some extra cash.

Good luck. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

I appreciate all the input, and your right exalted it does look pretty sexy. Where would i look to find the best deal on durabak or hurc? Also as far as prep, does it all need to be sanded? or would it just be scrub clean, power wash, break cleaner or some other cleanser, power wash etc....?
Would buying an undercoating gun and attaching it to an small aircompressor be alright to spray it on? or do you need a large industrial sized air compressor?

It needs to be buffed with at least 400 grit, I used a wire wheel and then some 60 and 150 grit (bed of a truck) then wiped it down with the xylene. I use a paint store here to get durabak, but I'm not sure where you can get it up there. You have to reduce it some to get it to go through the gun about 3:1 it sprays pretty even. it takes a pretty good sized compressor, I hooked two together to make sure I had enough air to get through one coat.

I used Herculiner and sprayed it in with a undercoating gun. Im really pleased with the way it turned out. I originally rolled it on my tailgate, and didnt like it all that much and was going to go with a different product, but I already had all the material so i thought id try shooting it and am pleased, would shoot it in the back of my Superduty as well.

I think i saw a ad at checker the other day. If you buy a gallon of herc for 80$ you get a set of cheesy tools for free. Might want to check it out. Checker, auto zone or jc whitney usually have the best deals on it.

If anyone else is looking for durabak, i couldnt find it anywhere around layton, so i looked online, looks like the cheapest place is going to be straight from durabak themselves, i got a price quote of 188.40 for a gallon and a quart with shipping. I tried to have 4wd match there price, and they said they could do it for 180 shipped, plus tax depending on the state, which at 7.5% is still 193.50.

They said if you want the additional quart, just put it in the comment box and they will adjust the amount on the credit card.
I'm still seeing if 4wd can come down with the shipping but we'll see.

I'm liking that idea quite a bit. Did you get a cheapie undercoat gun from somewhere or did you have a cool one? (read: I don't have one, and will only use it once and don't want to spend $$$ on a gun I'll never use again)

I don't remember my pricing being much over $250 or so from Durabak (I did buy it about a year or more ago, though) for 2 gallons. I wanted to mix the two grays to make it slightly darker, but not so dark it would suck all the light out of the "jeep". I should have quite a bit extra, I'd assume?

I would imagine since the price of oil (i imagine that there is a bit of oil in there) has increased that is why the price has changed?
