I had a buddy in ND try this with his project and he said it can take a beating and holds up fine.

He built his cage ot of 1.5x1.5x1/8 square stock do to the ease of cutting and welding without bending. (since most cant afford one)

He gussetted all the 90 deg corners and x membered all open space for the side to side strength.

Does this sound like this is feasable? Or is it going to be to weak from a bending factor?

I've seen the square tube cages around.... Way too redneck for me, not to mention I dont want to risk my life on welded joints. I had Rocklogic bend mine up, and I did all the final fitment and welding. VERY reasonable if you go that route.

Will most places that bend the tubing also notch it for you as well? And what is the avg cost per bend? Assuming I just walk in and dont know them at all.

he is actually on here too, he comes by every once and a while, his username is Snoopy...

I agree with the others, the square tube is a little too redneck, there is so many options to getting it done non-redneck that I can;t think of a reason to redneck it :p...also it will weigh a ton more than round tube would...and for the same thickness (say .120 wall) the round tube will be stronger...

Most shops would be happy to bend the tubing to your specs. However, if you expect them to notch it, that means they also have to precisely cut it to length so everything will fit properly. In many cases, the notching can be more time consuming or difficult than the bending (depending on complexity).

Basically, once you go from just having the tubing bent, to notching/fitting it too, it really makes more sense for the shop to do the project start to finish.

To answer your question on cost per bend, you'd expect approx. $10 depending on the complexity. Multiple bends within the same piece or "multiple plane" bends would of course be extra.
