I have a friend who just got a 1971 international 2wd truck 3/4 ton and we can't figure out what size the engine is it looks pretty small. Is there a web site that would give us a idea?????

Only other thing it could be is a 4 cyl (not in that rig) or a 392 V8. The other posibilities were listed by troutbum.

I helped my friend install his 392 with the T-18? mated to it into his 80 SII and was told that's nearly a 1000 pounds hanging from that hoist :eek:

IH = It's Heavy

If it is a V8 Check on the front passenger side of the engine. Just back from the fuel pump is a tab that sticks out with the engine size and S/N stamped into the block. I've always had to take a razor blade to every engine I've checked to take off the 25+ years of crud. You will have to look from the wheel well or use a mirror from above. The Binder Bulletin probably describes it much better.

Good Luck, Brad J.

They also made a diesel and a 6 popper, if it is a 3/4 ton it is most likely not a 392, 392 would be a great rock crawlin engine if its weight were cut by half. Cool old trucks though.

Forgot about the diesels. Still learning the IH stuff being a Toyota guy. :D

That 392 is the **** amongst IH guys, and makes tons of torque and really are reliable for that size of an engine. It'd be a unique and badass tow slut for sure.

The engine choices in 71 for the pickups were

AMC 232 6 cylinder standard
IH 304 V8 optional
IH 304 V8 LNG (liquid natural gas) optional
IH 345 V8 optional

The LNG option is very rare. I have a 71 Travelall w/ a 345. Hope this helps,

Brad J.
