At my home I use zoneminder and it works "ok" but not fantastic. Installing it on hardware better than a hand-me-down laptop would proably help. And like all linux applications it has to be a hobbie more than anything :)

It does have all the promises that you would want, like the choice between continuous recording, or motion detection triggered recording.

two companies I use to buy cameras from are
Security Cameras Direct (www.scdlink.com) and super circuits (www.supercircuits.com) they both have starter IP setup for 1-4 cameras and are reasonably priced... what you would do is set up a dvr and then network that dvr so that you can network into it. some are even able to use your smart phone to log into it... the super circuits site has a info site to see if you really need IP addressable cameras...

If you need any help I do this for a living and have alot of the set up equipment.

that brand is a good one... I installed the 16 camera kit for a company... the camera were sharp and clear but you can't zoom in or out on them... so look to make sure the lense you are getting will work for you... other wise the only thing wrong is the 500 gb hard drive is kinda small upgrade to at least a terabyte.

At work we use these DVRs with pelco cameras. At home I have one of these in the nursery to use as a baby monitor. It has been a great camera but I have not recorded anything. I just use it for live video. What is your application?
