iPod question: maybe it's time for me to buy one?

I'm headed on an airplane for 9 hours or so next week. I obviously don't have a need for an iPod or I'd already have one, but for this kind of a trip it could come in quite handy. My nephews have video iPods that they watch movies on. I'm sure they're $400 or something new?

Can someone in the iCircle give me the skinny on the iPod with the movie stuff? (maybe that's super old, outdated tech?) :D

If your lucky the battery would last half the trip. The screens are to small to really watch a movie on IMO. Do you have a laptop? That's what we use on trips.

Marc, if you pick one up, you're welcome to swing by and download some movies from our iTunes, we have somewhere around 300. We have just about any type of music you could want also. Let me know.

I've also heard stories of people using those weird things with pages in them to pass time. Can't remember what they are called for the life of me.....

Cody, you're right! Most airlines have WiFi now so you can browse webpages on the internet! So if you have a portable computing device (that's what you were looking for Cody) you can use the internet to look at webpages to pass the time.

Perfect!

honestly though, 9 hours on a plane would be miserable. I'd take a sleeping pill or end up really intoxicated.

I hate flights that last longer than about two hours. I honestly look for flights with connections because I want to get out of the plane (and they are cheaper!).
When I flew to Connecticut this past December I read all of the second volume of Winston Churchill's Second World War between the departing and returning flights. The dry boring facts, figures and accounts of 1940 kept me from remembering that I was stuffed in coach with fat people and screaming babies.

I have a couple of those sourced of things with pages and words (I really don't like reading on a plane. Hurts my eyes  ). I can handle about a 4-5 hour flight. After the first 4-5 hours, I don't know how I'll react. Thought it best to have something else to distract me.

I use my iPhone or my wife's old Touch on trips. I love having a couple movies in my pocket, so when ever I get bored I start a movie :D I find the screen of the Touch or iphone perfectly acceptable for watching movies on a plane. I tried to use my laptop on planes before and I absolutely hate it...and mines only a 13"...far too large and too bulky. Also, unless it's dark in the cabin, the screen doesn't show up all that great on a laptop.

Bummer, I actually just sold my wife's Touch...$100, the thing was nearly brand new, had never even been taken out of the original plastic and was put in a hard case as soon as she got it. That would have been perfect (save some money and accomplish exactly what you wanted to).

cool thing we do, is download movies with aVex software. Then with the right Apple cable to our tv we can watch movies on a real size screen wherever we happen to be. I have the 160G iPod, and along with around 15K songs, I have 150 full length movies I always have with me. You can even plugs into most hotel tvs, so you always have good movies to watch. I watch them on the iPod screen all the time too, it's not too small.

We have ipod Nano's and my kids watch movies on theirs. They were about $199.00 for the 16's and $149.00 for the 8's.

FWIW.

My opinion, get a Zune. I've had both and will never own another Icrap again. Zune is much more user friendly. I can listen to it for 2 days at work without charging it. I bought the 120g for about $250 @ wallymart. I have about 3000 songs, 15 movies, and 1000 pics on it and its only about half full.

Stephan: good on ya for reading Churchill. I'm reading the memoirs of his physician right now.

I like books better for travelling. Actual paper books, not e-books, though I have some on my phone and they are great too.
