Just wondering if fourlink is legal on the street for vehicles that had leaf springs converted to coils.I know street rodders get their stuff lisenced, do they fall into another class?

When I called (Safety and emmisions place) all they said is that they go by the height and wight of the truck. So for my cruiser the 4600, I believe it can be 24" from the ground to the lowest part of the frame.

I would call a safety and emmisions place and ask them.

Somehow I don't think that remotely answers his question.

I don't think there is anything in the lift laws about converting to a different suspension design, just frame height.

I ment that since that was the only requirement they gave me (stay within height) that I might not matter.

I am state/IM licenced, and I just looked in my certification book for safety the other week- Under 100" wheelbase, frame cannot be more than 24" off the ground. Over 100", I can't remember. But I did look at the suspension part. You can NOT legally change the suspension design of a vehicle (according to the state rules), but who cares? I have never heard of anyone failing safety inspection from that. If it doesn't look dangerous, it should pass. Technically, you can't even run a springover legally, but it still passes.

The hight of the vehicle is not based on the wheelbase any longer. SOA is legal as long as the axle/rig came that way from the factory.

Might want to get an updated IM book..

Note:

I'm not starting a fight just basing the info on the New Lift Laws.

I would say yes,

Remebering the conversation I think you have with the UHP. (I think it was you) it is not legal to alter the way the vehicle is attached to the axle. Meaning, the UHP does not want anyone to remove or alter spring purches and/or mounting hard ware.

This whole thing seems one way to me, bashing 4x4's.. First no custom suspension, street rodders build their sheit as well as we do and they have no issues? the other little pet peeve I'm having is the tire coverage thing, you see semis with no tire coverage every other block, they may have mudflaps but no tire coverage since there isn't a trailer connected.... do we need to license these old wheelers as classics to be totally exempt from these laws that keep a few of us from having fun, I mean it's not like they are daily drivers..I wonder who is incharge of how to categorize vehicles in the first place?

ya that was me, what I remember of it  I do remember the officer saying you can't take a sprung under axle and make it sprung over (you must use a sprung over axle in order to get this legal).. I just need to go down to the Highway department and get this 4 link issue cleared up (use the hot rodders as an example I guess?) I'll do this after I'm finished with the Camaro (adding some more WRX Exterminator parts :D )

I went through the hole section on motor vehicles and this is what I found.
41-6-148.31 subsection 2 (a)
In doubtful or unusual cases, or to meet specific industrial requirements, personnel of the Utah Highway Patrol shall inspect the vehicle to detumen the road worthiness and safe condition of the vehicle and wether it complies with sections 41-6-148.29-41-6-148.33
And those just explane what wheel width is and lift hight. So really there is nothing about it. I remeber seening a 94 dodge 1500 with a coil convertion on the rear a few years back. He was all over town and never saw him pulled over.
Just make it look stronger than the factory set up.

My book is from last year- sorry, didn't know they changed the laws since then. And my rig is a sammi, so springover is illegal, technically. I should have specified. :)

I made it down to the Highway department yesterday, no one besides a desk gal to talk too.... she said someone would be there today, I was busy at work today and never had time to call, maybe tomorrow I'll find out something?
