Is my clutch toast?

I have a 97 TJ with a AX-15, this morning when I went to start it, it was in reverse and took off, I turned it off quickly and popped it out of gear, I then restarted it and tried to put it in gear and could not, the only way to get it in gear was turning it off and putting it in gear and starting it, in gear. Where should I start, should I just buy a new clutch or the something else I should check first. Oh yeah, I checked the fluid and it was full.

Thanks for any info.

I would check linkage first. The TJ should be hydraulic clutch if it's came loose from the bellhousing or if you got a leak and didn't have any fluid it would explain the problem.

I would say that your clutch is working just fine. Seems to engage well enough. I give a second vote to clutch linkage, the problem is when you step on the pedal you are not dis-engaging the clutch.

Yeah, I'd look at the master and slave cylinders first. The clutch seems to work fine. How does the pedal feel?

check the inside of your fire wall for leak thats where master cylnders leak if you change one or the other do both at same time the worn out parts dont like the presher of new parts and they tend to soon fail

I have found no leaks anywhere, I checked the master cylinder first to see if it was full. It was full and I have found no leaks anywhere. I was told that if it was the slave cylinder, I would have lost all fluid, so I was going to replace the master cylinder. That makes sense about replacing both. Thanks for the info.

I had the master cylinder go out Tuesday on my way to work.. I had very little resistance in the pedal.. and had to do the wonderful start in gear and hope for no red lights once I got done with the 55 mile freeway drive home  .. then I changed them both. Took about 2 hours in the driveway at night..
