Is the United States a Democracy?

In one of my classes this summer (one of the last 3 I EVER have to take!) we were asked whether or not we though that the United States was a democracy.
My basic thought on the subject is this:
No, we are not a democracy in the classical sense. We, the citizens, do not have a direct say in the way that the government is run. Instead we elect representatives to 'represent' us in government. That makes us a republic, a democratic republic but not a democracy.
What do you guys think?

That is the correct technical definition.

It an more accurate assessment our government is a monetarily moeivtated old boys club.

But it is the best old boys club there is.

I did'nt know it was up for debate!

Except with Al Gore, Who i truly think believes that America is a Democracy!

And to the Republic for wich it stands, comes to mind. :)

Technically we'd be a republic, but it seems more like an oligarchy. The same people get elected and appointed to positions of power, and they share that power and those offices with their friends. It's a small group.
