Well, I finally started doing something with my FJ55... don't hold your breath though, it's nothing to dramatic yet, but it is something.

I pulled out the front bench seat, all by myownself, which if you knew me, you would understand that was a feat of monumental accomplishment, because I know just about **** when it comes to vehicles.

I have some bucket seats a buddy gave me a while back, that are a in a lot better condition than my old bench seat was. It's going to take some tinkering to get the new seats mounted in though. Right now they are just sitting in the front, but they'll be a far cry better when there all set in.

All the upholstery panels have been taken out, and scrubbed clean. I used to think they were a special Utah desert tan color, but after cleaning them, I realize they are just a generic gray. They look much better now, almost new in fact. I think I broke damm near every clip taking them off though. I think they are called tinnerman clips or something like that, but had been in there so long they practically shattered when I pulled them off. Don't know if I'll have much luck finding more of them or not, so I may have to come up with something else to mount the panels back in when I'm ready too. I'm definitely planning on waiting until I can clean up all of the **** that's been collecting behind them for the last 30+ years though.

I know it's not much of an overhaul or anything, but like I said earlier, at least it's a start. I don't have any pictures to post of the seats, because I forgot to bring my friggin' camera.. not that it's anything extraordinary to see.

At any rate, I'll update the progress as it comes, but I suspect this thread may sit idle for a while at the same time.. anywhoodles, it's a work in progress. And if anybody has a use for a front bench seat from a 1976 FJ55, just send me a pm and I'm sure we can work something out. It's not in the best condition, but I'd likely let it go for free to a good home.

PICS!!!! :)

Give Kurt @ Cruiser Outfitters a call to see if he can point you in the direction of the little nit-picky items such as those plastic clips.. He's the local Cruiser Guru..

Awesome! Its cool to see someone on here actively working on their pig. I have buckets in mine and a bench sure would be nice so my girl can sit next to me, but I have other plans. I got a super sweet console thats going to go between the seats instead, so I'm going to need new buckets (skinnier ones so the big ol console will fit).

Keep up the good work and keep us posted!

Well... nothing too spectacular today either, but I did get some one on one time with the Piggy. I pulled up the weather stripping on the front and rear passenger doors, and started scrapping out all of the rust in the tub...

I haven't found any spots yet where the rust has eaten through the tub, or really any spots where it's even real thick, but it's distributed pretty evenly throughout. I pulled out the seatbelts so I could work around them, and started to tear up the custom linoleum the previous owner had glued onto the floor on the driver side. That was a kick in the ass, and I didn't even quite get it all the way out yet... most of it, but not all of it.

Interesting thing is, I found out the original color was powder blue. The metal on the driver side underneath that crap has actually been kept in pretty good condition.

So nothing too fantastic to report.. just puttin' in a little old-fashioned elbow time on it. Hopefully next time I get to work on it, I'll finish up getting all that crap out and get the chunkier parts of rust out so I can start sanding out the stubborn parts. I forgot to bring my camera up, so I didn't take any pictures.. but I'll make sure next week I have it so I can take some shots before I get back to the cosmetic care.

:D

No huge news flash today. I went to work inside the piggy today, trying to clean her up a little bit and figure out what I'm going to do with all the rust.. and there is plenty of it. Same stuff different day really. I took out all the seat belts so I could scrape around them, and pulled back some of the weather stripping around the doors just to see what was lurking underneath.. I would probably feel better about it had I not looked, but if I'm going to spend time on it, I might as well do it right.

I finally got all that linoleum crap up, but I still need to get some of the more stubborn patches of rubber up. That should prove to be a fun task. I swept up all the dirt out of the back, and used the vacuum to get the rest. The rear end of the tub actually doesn't look too bad, especially compared to the front. Once I get it all cleaned out and smooth, and figure out how much of the back end I am going to cut out, I plan on getting a spray in liner to keep it tidy.

I know, I know, it's nothing too special and certainly nothing to write home about, but at least I'm working on it to some extent, rather than let her sit there and rust out.. :D

The biggest news of the day is.... I remembered to bring my camera, and took a couple of photos today! I'll post them below

Sooo... as you can see, she's lost that lovin' feelin'

But with a little lovin' from me, hopefully someday I can get her Moab ready

First photo is before I got all the crap chiseled out, now it looks more akin to the second photo, which is the passneger side

That looks a LOT better than nearly every 55 I've seen. :D I looked and looked and looked for one several years ago... never did find one worth keeping. :D

MOAR PICS! what's the outside look like? I don't think you're off to too bad a start w/that one.

I'll also echo Sami and say "Call Kurt-- he knows stuff!"

Outside isn't too bad either.. she's got some rough spots around the fenders near the wheels and underneath the doors.. but that's not too big a deal because I'll end up replacing them anywhoodles.. Here's a couple of amatuer shots of the exterior.

Lol.. You know it's funny, but I started to realize that not too long after I started tearing it up. The kid I bought it from was of the understanding that the previous owner had put it in. When I started pulling it up I saw the original paint underneath it and started thinking it was factory, and by the time I finished, I was sure of it. So yes, as far as you know, you're right.. :D

They certainly did a good job putting it in too, because it's a ***** to get out. I'm sure that 3 decades of fermentation didn't help either.. lol

Your pig looks pretty clean.. I don't think you're going to have to worry about pulling it out of your rig, but it was a must on mine. Lucky you

Thanks, But Clementine needs all sorts of rust work, Red Dwarf will someday be a camp trailer, If I ever get that far, They are #'s 3 and 4 in the line for vehicle work to be done, Im just enjoying them.
Good luck again :)
