jeep radio

I don't know anyone who has had luck with a in dash style radio in their CJ. I attribute the problem to the way the body forms just behind the firewall. I've witnessed drips of water falling directly onto the spot where a deck would be. Not even on a really wet day, sometimes all it takes is a little condensation to zap any radio I've installed.

Has anyone had any luck with another set up?

My brother bought a warranty for his and he's on his third radio for his cj.

How do the center console type work?

i have done a couple of rigs where instead of a deck we use an ipod (charging) cord as the main source. it is labor intensive and you do need a line driver and an amplifier and decent pair of speakers. or i can install that tuffy console. either way it can be done so you sound good on the trail.
let me know if you interested....

Interesting... Tell me more. Got the Ipod. What do you suggest we do?

basically what i have is an ipod cable with the plug (for the bottom of the ipod) on one end and a pair of rcas, a power, and a ground wire (for charging) on the other end. because the ipod doesn't have a ton of output because it is designed for headphones we plug in rcas through a line driver giving the amplifier more information to amplify. from the amp to some speakers.

I was looking at doing this too (because of not wanting a head unit).

What is a "line driver" specifically...just a smaller amp, or are there specific line drivers?

I had a low budget version of this, but not enough amplification (2 crappy sparkomatic powerboosters) I was gonna put them in series to see if it was better...but then I was given the Extreme Jeep Makeover, so I'm doing it a little nicer.

a line driver boost the voltage to the amplifier.
audiocontrol makes really nice ones like the matrix or the overdrive.
there are cheaper alternatives as well.
i would be willing to hook up any wheelin brother, i dont have pricing in front of me. if you emailed me i would be happy to figure up an estimate.

I've been kicking around the I-pod idea because then you can remove it when it's wet outside. I lost my third head unit about a month ago, so its time for a change.

Nice! Its always good to know people with connections. Next time I fry a head unit I know who to call :)

Back on topic I habe my head unit in the dash but will be relocating it into a Tuffy center console. Next I have to find a way to connect my Ipod to it so I don't have to use CDs.

Ryan does incredable work too. I've seen a bunch of it (not in my junk.. I'm too damn cheap). My buddy Sam has been working with Ryan for years, and thru him I've seen some incredable systems. Not all boom, well blanced and very clean quality work.
