Does anybody out there know anything about these? I might be getting one a partial trade. I think it is a 1971. It has the little v-6 in it. Are they basically a cj with a different body? What about drivetrain? Thanks

Search "Commando", might have some better results.

They have a different hood, and obviously a different body in general. Drivetrain is usually the Buick v6, torquey little engine, a t-18? and a Dana 20 t-case. If I remember right, 44's both ends.

I love them, and have come close to buying several but the 2-door thing always stops me. :(

EDIT: I am wrong about a 44 front. It's smaller than that.

I have a 73 in the garage that I'm working on. The frames are similar to the older CJs but not exactly the same, bodies are different, mine only had a 44 in the rear, the 72-73 have a different front clip that is longer for the straight 6 and v8.

DO IT!!! I am totally addicted to these!

The pros:
longer wheelbase
more storage room
mechanical parts are readily available
Unique
Classy
Stylish
Smooth ride (if stock).
71's have Saginaw steering, older ones have Ross, which is crappy.

The cons:
Body pannels are harder to come by
most, if not all (excluding the 72-73) have a dana 27 front axle with drums. not a con if running stock, but for wheeling with bigger tires you will want to swap it.
people call them scouts and broncos....

I have had 5 of these. 2 that currently run and drive, 1 that I am planning on making a 4 door, (Tacoma). 2 junk ones that are just for spare parts.

If you end up getting this and need parts, let me know, I have a bunch.

I would have to change a couple of things. Some 70's had saginaw steering.Mine does and it is stock. Also I don't think there is anymore room in the Jeepsters then CJ-7.The tailgate angles in taking away the space. So it equals out to the same basic square footage. This is assuming the you have the rear seats in.

Im not an expert, just a junkie.... I never had a CJ, but I did have a TJ, and even with the angle of the gate, I still have way more room. in my TJ, I could only fit a small cooler behind the seat and be able to close the gate. My Jeepster has room for cooler, chairs, dog, tools, ect... I find the angle nice for small long items like chairs, or my hi-lift jack.

Actually the angle of the gate and rear window is what first caught my eye. I like the way it swoops down in the back... Hence my name, swoop (69 was the year of my first jeepster).

What are the things worth? It is really clean. Very little rust.

$800-1500 for a beater.
$2500 for a decent one.
$3500-$6000 for a restored or built Jeepster
$10,000 for a mint convertible
$30,000 for Alan Jacksons Jeepster at a Barret Jackson auction.

Maybe I installed my rear seat too far back in my Jeepster. It is really a half cab with a fulltop on it.It didn't have a rear seat so I got a old Cj-5 seat and put it in.Had to drill the holes.

any chance you are going to the Jeepster 40th Ann event in Silverton CO next week? We will be there from sunday night or monday morning till friday afternoon. there should be a pretty big group of Jeepsters there. doing some trails and bbq, swap meet, riding the train...

you should join us and check out the seating arrangements...

I like the look with the CJ hood and grille.

I am not a fan, although I understand why most people do it.

#1 if you put a V8 in, the longer hood and fenders keep you from cutting into your firewall.
#2 if you crush your hood and or fenders, CJ's are a lot easier to come by.

I think the CJ look is better than the bullnose, but not nearly as cool as the Jeepster look.

FYI, in Colorado last week, we had 2 adults, 2 kids, a large cooler, my boxer and a boat load of tools all inside my Jeepster. Nice and roomy!

I saw 3 beautifully restored and built-up Jeepsters on trailers last Monday morning going N from Ouray/Ridgeway,CO towards Montrose. Now I know why they were in the area. If I had known they were having a local rally I would have gone to Silverton to see them all. We passed them on the highway. Beautiful trucks!!

Your rear seat must be more forward then mine.I don't think I could fit all 4 of us and our lab in ours.Of course my kids are teenagers.
