Upside down flag is distress signal

MARGA KELLOGG
Staff Writer

OCEANSIDE ---- In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., Vietnam veteran Dana Rickard began flying his flag upside down, a move which he said caused him to be harassed by some people.
Rickard said flying the flag upside down is a standard military distress signal and was never intended to be disrepectful.
"It means we need some help here. That's American heritage, it has nothing to do with saying anything bad about the flag," said Rickard, an Oceanside resident.
The United States Flag Code supports Richard's statement.
The code formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag and includes the following:
The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.
The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything. 9/28/01

Exactly right. I believe this country is some serious trouble, and have felt that way for quite some time. The richness of character, the interwoven cultural heritage, the aspiration to greatness that America can and should be, are NOT being furthered by thinking that only serves to engorge huge portions of society on the teat of the working class, at the cost of our collective future.

Therefore, I feel it is appropriate to display an icon representing our flag in such a state.

I knew the meaning behind it, and recognized what tacoma was trying to convey. I see nothing innapropriate with his avatar. Especially when compared to other no-no's described in the above US flag do's and don'ts.. Lots of people don't notice the everyday misuse of the American flag.

I as well displayed an upside down flag on my towrig for these reasons. However, I did this around December of 2000-_-

Got lots of comments driving around the streets of Albuquerque with an upside down flag and Texas plates. Especially from the police.

Don't forget to donate to BFE. If you believe your going to be losing your land, (never mind the new drilling) your going to need places like that.

Oh. and Tacoma. Get your own tag line:greg:

WOW I don't even live in Utah and I am a member of U4WDA. I support the land use issue. I watched in Colorado as hundred's of thousands of BLM were turned into a national monument. Land that I had spent my whole childhood and teen years riding motorcycles and four wheelers on. This is an issue that shouldn't be on the back of everyones minds it is real and does happen. Support groups that support your right's to use the land. $15.00 dollars so little an amount that could ensure your future use of public land Come on People pony up.

And to mess with the greenies, I ordered a "Hypermiler" sticker (yes, my ZJ can get better mileage than the EPA says it can) and it will be placed right next to U4 sticker in my ZJ rear window...
