Jonny Joint Shackles

Does anyone have experience with All Pro Offroads jonny joint shackles or something similar? I am considering them but would like some reviews. I am also concerned about getting more lift out of them because they would have to be mounted to the bottom of the frame rail. I don't want or need more lift.

I considered putting some on. However all the pictures I saw with people using them as well as talking to a few people that use them, all showed that the springs leaned to one side or the other. It also put alot of wear on the front bushings in the leaf spring as they are the only thing now keeping the spring straight which wear out then spring goes crooked.

I ran alcans with orbit eyes in bolth ends of the spring in the rear & regular bushings up front. I loved them! they kept the springs from getting twisted & abused. I had mine on for 8 yrs. I felt like if I had them on the front, as well. that the truck would turn into a floppy slinky.

ok i dont want to hijack, but i have been tossing around the idea of notching the portion of my frame where you would normally hole out and sleeve for the shackle of your front axle. and inserting a creeper joint, johnny joint.. whatever.

my question is, would this cause excessive roll on off camber situations? or how do you think it would affect steering ? maybe the effort is not worth the gain?

P.S i am going to be running the creeper joint shackle in the rear.

I've had the all pro ones on my runner for a few years now and love them, I put the TG ones on my pops truck and they work well too.

johnny joint style pivots from a flex joint at the frame mount giving side to side flex at the shackle, revolvers open and unload.

i ran revolvers on my first cherokee and had nothing but problems, and a ton of noise.

i now have the tg creeper joint rear shackle mounts, i noticed a litte more lean not much at all, but i like to see my leaf springs not taking the twisting
motion as much, also with the creeper joint set up i shortened my shackles and leveled the truck out.

ok, an update.

i love these. i dont think that they yeild as much flex as people think they will give you. but it keeps the suspention cycle smooth throughout. not tippy on side hill at all.
be VERY carefull when you weld them on, that you dont melt the kevlar inside like it did

You should have taken them apart first ;) ...But then again, they are a royal PITA to assemble...

good to know, i need to rebuild the one i melted:mad:

Yeah, c clamp or a vise will work even better. Just use various sizes of sockets. On the one side with the snap ring, you will need one large enough, but still small enough to enable you to install the snap ring.

Lube the bushing/ball first and let the bushing sit in the sun for a few first, to soften up a little bit.... Or soak it in hot water I guess would work too?

And as a tip..After you get teh snap ring in place, spin it to assure it's in the groove all the way before letting off on the pressure. I've had brand new units from Currie fall apart becuase I didn't check the snap ring first.

Why dont they ship these things unassembled? What reccomendations would you have during welding to keep the nylon from overheating and melteing if I dont want to take it apart before I weld it on?

Not sure on the all pro ones since I can't find them. The summit machine joints as well as the ones I have used on the scout were very easy to take apart. You have to take them apart to weld on them. The trail gear ones come with the shackle part already on them so you wouldn't have to take those apart since you wouldn't be welding directly on the housing. http://www.trail-gear.com/images/2008-1584-600.jpg

you have a link for the all pro ones?

I've put both brands on and the TG ones are much easier to weld on just take your time. I had a hell of a time putting the clips back in my old Allpro ones and like they said the welding surface is way to close to the bushings and recommend taking those ones apart for sure.
