a little help needed to figure out what's wrong. just doing a little town driving and there was a loud sound "kaun kaun kaun" coming from the floor.

here's what i know:
1) it slowed down as the speed decreased --> obviously drivetrain.
2) it happens in neutral.
3) the sound occurs at regular intervals (no random "kauns")
4) removing the front driveshaft from the front axle did not help.

i'm thinking it could be the following:
1) inside the transfer case
2) somewhere down the rear driveshaft, possibly a U-Joint?
3) long shot... low on either gear oil in the D44 or ATF in the case

i installed a Currie SYE and Currie rear driveshaft myself about a year ago. other than that the NP231 case is stock.

it's too dark to work on it now, but i stole the best spot in the parking lot to work on it.
i'll just sit back with my strawberry fanta and watch Hercules until i get a response :D

ya gotsta be optimistic about breakage... especially when it could mean an Atlas II ;)
(oh geez, i hope my mom doesn't read that  )

not knowing ANYTHING obout the jeep :D can you pull off the rear driveline and still run the drivetrain through the gears? Or is it a slip yoke on the t-case?

does this only happen if 4wd and after turning corners? My Dads truck was making some ckanking noises when I was driving it... and I have no idea what it was.

nope it happens all the time now. i'll check the rear driveshaft this evening. that might just be the problem.

Put it up on Jack Stands and run it thru the gears. See if you can hear or see where it may be coming from.

How old are the U-Joints? That's the first thing I'd look at.

Good Luck!

ok it's running in front wheel drive without the noise. is it bad if the rear pinion wiggles a little bit under pressure?
and how much is a u-joint and can i get em from Autozone? the ones i have are 1 year old.

With the rear shaft on the rig, block the tires and put the trany in nutral.

Grab the drive line at the end close to the pinion. Push up and down, side to silde with some force. Do the same to the other end of the shaft.
When doing this look at the u joints to see if there is any movement.
Most of the time if you have a falty joint you can feel the joints looseness.

ps, If your u joint is gone, get a spicer joint from six states. Don't bother with those POS ones from AZ.

dayum! i wish i had my digital camera with me today! here's what happened. i drove the jeep to Six States in Orem this morning (in front wheel drive of course :D ) and Kevin worked on it. so happens that only 3 bolts were left holding the ring gear to the ARB! ! the rest of the bolts were... ummm... ya... mauled, mangled and left for dead in various parts of the diff. so i picked up 3 u-joints for the hell of it while Kevin shimmed it up... oh speaking of shims HELL! speaking of the WHOLE INSTALL (this is where i digress into rant mode)... 1 year ago i had 4WheelParts (already a bad sign) in Georgia install my 4.56 gears and a rear ARB. they never put shims on it. they didn't put locktite on the bolts that are now chewed up. they took the shims that came with the ARB and shoved em in some crevice. they used aftermarket bolts instead of the Dana ones. it's like they wanted this thing to explode! after sharing my feelings with the Georgia 4WP, i made SLC 4WP order in a new rear r&p and ARB. and you better believe they are gonna pay every cent for labor and parts. i'll bring my new .22 just in case. (finished ranting) on the positive side, Kevin at Six States is AWESOME! for 4 hours of work fixing the crappy setup he only charged me $70. that makes a poor college student like me pretty happy :D

so if you ever see a 4WP give it the bird. if you ever see Kevin give him a wave. by next tuesday the jeep will be as good as new!

had a pinion nut come loose from the local 4wp. The pinion ate the ring gears. The gears were warenteed. NOT INSTALL KIT OR LABOR. 150$ later...... lets hear how it all turns out....

oh ya! 4WP paid for EVERYTHING! brand spanking new D44 ARB and R&P, along with the labor involved. total came to just over $1000 for them, et $0.00 pour moi. :D needless to say 4WP will never install another thing on my rig.

I wasn't going to comment on this, but by choosing to not have any labor done at 4wp SLC, you're punishing a shop that just took care of you big time.

It bugs me that people let a negative experience override a positive experience. 4wp SLC stood behind their company's work and fixed the error that was caused by another shop.

This bugs me because I end up dealing with similar mentality in my job. I won't buy X product, because Y years ago, that company's product gave me a bad experience. Usually, it is more than one year, but I feel like the mentality is the same.

I can understand you saying you won't go back to 4wp Georgia and, if, a year from now, you end up with the same problem, I wouldn't blame you for saying you won't go back to 4wp SLC.

But, give 4wp SLC the credit they deserve for taking care of the customer when a wrong was done.
