Awesome little pocket rocket before they became popular. Coarse, unrefined, fast as sin... Always wanted to drive one.

There was one in the James Bond movie that wasn't James Bond, "Never say Never"...

Boy does this bring back memories. I owned Renault Caravelle's and raced Dauphin's with Gordini heads 902cc and cut springs. 95 MPH in the back straight at the Riverside Raceway. Never won a thing. The Le Car Renault 5 had a class of its own in the 1970's and Ray Block raced a R8 at Dodger Stadium with 1 carburetor per cylinder. The best days were SCCA racing all over California in the 1960's. I can't speak french but I wrote an article for the Renault Owners Club Of America (ROCA) and had a blast at road races, slaloms, traloms, and hill climbs. I will see if I can find some pictures. Thanks Stephen.

This is the only picture I could find. This was taken at a ROCA Driver Training day at the Los Alimitos Race Track parking lot June of 1958. I had on my ROCA badge and Baret which was mandatory apparel. I did find a movie of Stirling Moss driving a Cooper at the Riverside Raceway but it had more pictures of girls than cars.

could this be the inspiration for the festiva with the tauros sho motor in the back? That was always my theory at least. I once planned to build a chevy luv with an olds tornado motor in the bed.

I dig it. I'd DD something like that in a heartbeat.

I got to drive one of the very, very few street legal ones in the US ten years ago for about 15 minutes. It had been traded in to Strong Porsche towards a GT3 and my buddy was a tech there. I never got to open it up, just took it around the neighborhood. A blast to drive, handled like a shifter kart, but it was loud and bumpy. Even having driven a Samurai as a DD for a decade, I'm not sure I could handle a Turbo in that role for long. The engine literally rattles your chest its so noisy.

Yes, the Turbo was the inspiration for the SHOgun, which is also a wicked cool car. Renault built a successor of sorts to the Turbo called the Clio V6 Renault Sport in the early 2000's which is also quite cool.
