I to to buy a couple of laptops for the kids for Christmas. I need affordable and something that can be upgraded. I have always had good luck with my HP desktop.

OK pc gurus what would be a good choice.

i love my Dell.. but, i'm not the biggest fan of Vista.. you can order the Dell Inspiron 1500 from Dell.com in the small business category, and get it with windows XP.. i kinda wish i'd done that.. it's a great machine for an all around laptop.. affordable at $599, and you can choose a number of colors..

Dells are still pretty good... I hear Gateway is making a comeback with quality components. I'm hearing the same thing about HP lately, which is weird. I'll never buy HP/Compaq ever again.

I love my Toshiba Techra. We ordered a new lap top in the office a while ago and it came in with Vista. After lots of hours and frustration trying to load software we sent it back and got a different new laptop with XP.

I bought a compaq/(HP). It was only like $399 last year and it came with a printer. It was awesome for the first year then the harddrive crashed but I just bought a bigger hard drive (120 gig) and 2 gig RAM for ~$120 Ever since then it seems to be awesome! I really like it but I don't push it too hard I mostly use it for internet, MS Office for school, and listening to music. I would buy another HP although I would love a Dell I don't like alot of the cases of the Dells. So my opinion is to buy a cheaper laptop and either upgrade or buy a new one after a couple years. Computers change so often I think it is a total waste to buy the expensive stuff right off. It is only worth it if you need the computing power. Also the same goes with Macs IMO Macs are a waste of money unless you do alot of music/photo/video editing. Some other things to look at is if the kids are in college you can save a ton of money on the software ie. MS office and Virus software that can save money on the price to buy.

Last week I bought a 2x2.0/2g/120gSATA/ABG-1000/XPP dell for my business with a case for 709.00 shipped, it's a pretty quick laptop, and a dang good price. If your kids are older maybe 14+ a mac would be a better choice, most kids today are more into video/pics/music etc, and a mac comes with all the software pre-loaded, even though it's a steeper price, you get more ! for your $.

My best advice is to find one that doesn't come with Vista. You have to get a smokin machine for it to run fine out of the box. We buy HP (business class) laptops for PC users, mostly, at work. We have very few issues with them. Infact after 100+ we just got our first DOA the other day. I've never had to send any (besides that one) in for any repair work.

I do agree with the others that have suggested macs but I guess that would be a given from me :p bang for the buck you can't beat the macbooks.

That sounds great and all, but the most I want to spend Is $600.00 tops. I need something decent that they can upgrade later.

I would go with HP or equivalent then... they are upgradeable and works well for what I use it for. You can pick up a pretty good deal on those day after thanksgiving sales if you are up for it... :)
