Hi, a small group is planning a trip to the west desert. we generally do the pony express...but thinking about doing north of the lake. the trip through golden spike, to lucin, down to wendover seems logical, but i was thinking of doing a trip up to city of rocks in southern central idaho. anyone do this route before? would it be passable this time of year? good, bad, stick with the previous routes?

thanks in advance.

The Transcontinental is generally passable year round, snow/mud can make it a wild day but thats all part of the adventure. The route up and over City of Rocks could easily get into some deep snow, I've not bee there in the heart of winter so I'm not sure how passable it would be.

If my memory serves me right they lock the gates to city of rocks during winter. I have been out on the roads south of COR in the early spring and it has just been a muddy mess. Sounds like it might be fun keep me posted.
