looking for a GM tranny, I like the idea of lower 1st and OD, but all I hear is it is a weak tranny. thinking of putting this behind a 383 stroker.

So what is weak about the 700r4 is it the case or internals, I assume everything but the case can be beefed up? anyone?

The 700R can be beefed up internally, many updates are available. I have a friend running a 406SBC with ported Vortec heads and a roller cam in a CJ-7 (450HP on the desk top dyno). He has had a few hiccups but no major failures. It has a Advanced adapter on it to a Dana 300 and the biggest problem has been the seal between the trans and the case blowing out. Kent at Six States in Orem has the case now and is installing a new sealed bearing to stop that. The trans was built by a close friend (mechanic).
He also built a 700R for a Buick 455 with a centrifugal supercharger (700HP). They had alot of problems with that one and ended up changing it out for a T400.
PM me and I will give you the mechanic's info. There are more and more parts available for the 700R all the time- they can be spendy for high HP applications, but the versatility of the low first gear and overdrive is cool.

They can be built at least to the level of a T350.........Got more power/towing than that, get a 4L80

'puter controlled right? I was hoping to avoid that if possible?

The 700r4 turned into the 4L60E with the addition of the computer stuff.

Not sure if there was a non-computer 4L80, mostly because.. that would be like.. a TH-500 or something LOL I can't remember anything besides the 700r4 before they went to the newer style of naming.

700r4's can be beefed up quite a bit, but like with everything else, it costs money. I'd agree that the 4L80E is probably better to start with, though the cost to add the computer might mitigate that somewhat.

one more thing, you can get lower ratios for the TH400, not sure how much fun that makes street driving though... I think you can get a 3.something:1 and a lower 2nd, same final drive.

Sorry I meant for the 4L80

I think there is one or two years of a 4L80 ('92-93?). The 4L80-E is computer controlled for sure, but you could maybe find a 4L80? The 80 is cool as it's a T400 with an OD. What they should have done in the first place.

the first 4L80E was 91. All of them have been electronically controlled. The controller is $800 and the trans rebuilt cost $2500. You can find them in the wrecking yard but they go fast- very hard to find.

So i guess the link I posted earlier is not such a bad deal after all.

sure... if you NEED a 4L80E... hehehe

In my opinion a mildly built 700r4 will hold up to normal use/abuse. They're still not too damn cheap though.
