Legality of 1 ton axles---moved from a For Sale post

Gotta check the door tag to be sure, but I'm kinda remembering that Toyota trucks have a higher GVWR than 4Runners do. (prolly cuz of the expected load-carrying capacity in the bed of the truck vs. the passengers in the 'runner)

Trucks get the 26" level, 4runners I'm not certain of.

Too bad it won't matter, isn't it anything over 9500 is 28"? I know! I'll check out the link. *e-riffling of pages* OH MY 7500 and up is 28". Alrighty then! I'll keep the stock data plate.

It has nothing to do with the current GVW, it is the factory GVW that they look at. Unless you can alter the VIN tag, yer staying at 24".

The GVW on the tag on my '88 4Runner is 5,080 lbs, so I can be 26" instead of 24". IIRC the GVW on my '85 Toyota Pickup was 4,850, which made it legal at 26" also, so his 4Runner is probably good for 26" unless the VIN tag says otherwise.

I went to look into getting my 4runner registered and the guy said I was in the 24" range and I was BARELY legal I think I may have been a half an inch over in fact. I think I will have to go get my rig weighed so I can add 2 inches

Look at your VIN tag on the driver's side door jamb. As I posted above my '88 4Runner with the 22RE has a 5,080 lb. GVWR. I would be willing to bet that your 4Runner is over 4,500 GVWR...if that's what the tag says then you can be 26". Like Shawn said, the actual weight of your rig is irrelevant. Most likely the guy that told you that you could only be 24" either doesn't know the law or didn't look at your GVWR on the VIN tag.
