So....Angie watered our TV and it is dead....

Went looking for a new one last night, almost bought a 27" Samsung HD for $580. But is HD worth $250 over a regular standard TV?
We really don't watch it that much, ussually just back ground to whatever else is going on....Maybe 2-3 dvd's a month.

What good, whats bad? what should I stay away from? Looked at a LCD, but from what I understand, the contrast in them is poor until you get into the upper $$$$ ones....I will NOT spend $1000++ for a TV. Sorry guys, just not worth it to me.

Did you explain to her that watering the TV won't make it grow bigger? :D

I've got a 53" HD TV but only normal Dish programming right now. Good pic but nothing compared to when RockMonkey plugged his digital camcorder in to it. HUGE differance. I'm going to switch to the HD programming soon so I have HD satallite and that I can plug my laptop into the receiver. That way I have a 53" monitor to use. OK plus there's the fact that XBOX 360 games run at a higher res. That makes HALO2 clearier on the bigger maps. I spent $1600 on this TV 5 years ago. Ask the salesman about quality of the "guns" in the TV. Maybe Cody could answer your questions better than I did.

HD is well worth the extra cost, but programming is an issue. There are several HD channels available over broadcast, but HD dish service provides a ton of extra HD channels.

If that's all you're going to be using your TV for Marc, just get a regular tube. To me, with that usage, it's not worth spending $250 more. You can still get a pretty good picture out of the regular flat screens and such.

I'm not too up to date on the HD screen stuff... but isn't there a standards deadline for channels to start broadcasting in HD? In otherwords, everything will be in HD within a few years, right? Or is this just hear-say?

And I guess by then, HD tv's will come down in cost as well...

Broad cast TV will convert to digital (not necessarily HD) by Feb 12 2009...however Utah is trying to be one of the first converts and some rural areas are already converting starting January 1.

If you don't watch that much TV then there isn't much I can say to get you to buy a newer TV except that in the future you may be glad you did and they are cool. LCD technology is awesome, but you're right to get into a decent 26-32" LCD you'll be into it 1000. Most of the TV's in those sizes already have digital tuners so if you are relying upon broadcast TV for your programing you're golden and some of the local stations broadcast HD in the valley.

As far as tubes go, Sony makes good tube TV's as do a few others. Get a flat screen for sure.

You know how to get ahold of me if you want some chit chattage about it.

We bought a regular tube 32" TV a year ago from the WILLEY, it's big, but it works great for us.
