Lifting an Xterra

A friend of mine bought an Xterra and asked me where he should take it to install a lift.

I'll post up when I find out how tall, size tires, etc. I don't think he's going too crazy, just wants a little more clearance (that's how it starts).

Oh... 2.5", enough for 285/75r16's. Yup, pretty mellow. For starters...

Sami and I lifted his with OME parts from Cruiser Outfitters a couple years ago. His Xterra was a 2nd gen, and I believe 285's were what he ended up running. Easy enough if you wanted to tackle it yourself - It took the two of us just a couple of hours to do it all.

Assuming he's got a second gen (2005-current), the OME equipment for the Xterra is the way to go if you're looking to get a better than stock ride while gaining a little clearance (1.5-2"). I ran OME shocks & coils with cheap AC lifted coils up front, and 2" lifted AC shacles & OME Nitrocharger shocks in the back. That is a very budget route to go. The was amazing for the budgetness of what I put together. A full OME kit changes the feel of the truck completely. I highly recommend he go with front shocks/coils, and rear springs and shocks from OME. Kurt usually has these items in stock.

I ran that suspension setup with 285/75/16's, 255/85/16's, and larger retreaded 285/75/16's that measured out to 33". The best results I had were with the factory 285's and 255's. Before the aforementioned susp setup I ran a 1.5" coil spacer up front, which sucked. It cause a lot of coil bucket contact, and led to creased/chipped fenders due to a big/hard bump of the frontend.

I wouldn't mind another 2nd gen Xterra. If I were to build another one it'd have a Titan swapped frontend - differential & suspension; bombproof setup on an Xterra.

I've not heard of much issue with the Xterras running the Titan diff. I know the Xterra and Frontys are near identical, but I've also witnessed multiple clutch failures on Frontys @ 30,000mi and no such issues on Xterras. It seems that they're not built the same.

Regardless, from what I've seen from all te guys running a Titan diff under an Xterra, it's certainly an upgrade from the weaker R180 front diff.
