Light weight buggies

Seriously, I don't think there is. I think it's personal preference. Different buggies will excel in different areas. I've seen light weight buggies do some cool things, and I've seen heavy rigs do cool things. It all comes down to what you like and what you have.

One big factor I think a lot of people overlook is familiarity. People that have their rigs for years and know how they work and what to expect. These guys usually are dialed in and can outdrive high dollar rigs all day long. This coming from a guy that hasn't had the same rig for more than 2 years in a row.

Just thinking out loud here.

Good points, but I still stand on my optimum theory. But that optimum point is still in relation to what your goal is and the type of vehicle you are building.

I forget to factor in seat time... that's a very good point.

Sand rail frame

I've often considered a sand rail chassis modified to use a FWD drivetrain with the trans as a transfer case and solid axles. .

I also was thinking the same, My brother hit a deer with his Subaru Legacy, AWD. I removed all the VW components and the Pinto motor from the sand rail, Dropped out all the drivtrain, wiring harness and every thing else could think of. This set up was intended for gravel road driving in the desert, not much flex in the stock suspinsion.
This is the curent condition, My son i law got me into this rock crawling thing befor i could finish it

As a comparison, we just added up the weight of just the powertrain & axles of Matt's Jeep here at the shop...

Ford 460
C-6 trans.
NP203/205
Front Dana 60 w/ way beefy double ended ram mount and link bracketry
Rear Dana 80

2600 lbs. :greg:

Wow.. Sounds like a lot, but still doesn't hold a candle to SRN's mom..

Kidding.. Or am I?

I'd assume that 460 is gonna crank out some ponies though.. So power to weight is in line... Big motor to move big-boned rigs :greg:

Considering that some buggies weigh a TOTAL of 2600 lbs., she's a heavy girl for sure (I mean Matt's rig, not SRN's Mom). :p

This was along the same lines I had with my Beater. When I had originally bought it I was running 36" IROK's on half ton axles. Right after my first trip to Moab I looked into the usual parts for better crawling (lockers, 4.56 gears) and was told that those axles would not handle that. So, I started to cut down the weight so that the half ton axles would survive longer. After trimming off about 1200 to 1500 lbs the axles held up to 42" IROK's.
I wish I had the money and time to do a buggy build with a small 4 popper and other light weight items. I don't have the skills but would love to build one. I thought about using a Hendrix chassis and then buying a wrecked mid 90's Toyota 4-Runner. For the motor, tranny, X-case, and maybe even the rear suspension idea. The front axle would also be Toyota and I would think about adding a second X-case. Light weight = cheaper parts. This is a disscussion I have had with Sprueitt more than once.

 That's a heavy pile o parts... so after adding a chassis around that pile of madness, any guesses what the final weight would be?

rockape's buggy build

I read the whole build in the last few days just here and there. That thing is sweet for sure, but it sure would be a lonely ride.

The conclusion that I've come to, is that as long as a rig is thoroughly thought out, built well, and well balanced, it will perform awesome in some areas, but will always be outperformed in other areas by rigs that are simply built differently. Not necessarily better or worse, just different. I've always known this, but it has been an interesting experience for me to research more into lightweight buggies, you never know, maybe one day our jeep will be built and we'll need a 2 seater to accommodate the family :greg: I'll decide at that time whether to throw in (and build around) a 1.3L sami engine, a GM 5.3L, or a 1.7L Honda civic engine :) Seems like anything is possible with enough creativity.

i have been contimplating this also as i have my yota with the vortec v6 in it when the kids get old enought i will need more seating.

thinking of just removing the cab and building a formula toy chassis with a second row of seats with what i have all ready (built axles,4l60e,4.3, 39s)

or what i have in mind also is take my yota axles and build a full tube chassis using a vw vr6 with a super charger and making it fit either a six speed manual vw trans and do the set up like the honda buggies or just run the 4l6 behind it with the super charger and smaller pulley runing 10psi should be around 300hp and 300foot pounds. and be really fun.

i just think a turbo would be to jumpy in the rocks as i know the vw 1.8ts are gutless with out the turbo and hitting boost in the rocks would be exciting

the tdi in gregs idea would be fun to, but you could run a older td diesel and build it up with a t3t4 turbo and only have to run three wires and make it nice and simple.

we will see in a few years what the truck becomes but for now i like my heavy pig
